I've been using PCs for as long as I can remember & the only times I had issues were when I used the IE. Since the IE embargo no problems.

People who cry about how PCs suck are just too retarded to use them.

Get Tuneup Utilities to get a handle on your computer's performance
http://www.tune-up.com/products/tuneup-utilities/

Get Avast or Avira for an antivirus.
http://www.free-av.com/
http://www.avast.com/

I run Avast, it's low resource. I could pretty much download a virus or some bologna and it would smash it into the ground with it's "On Access Protection".

(I mean, the premium versions cost money.. But no one's saying you gotta pay for it ;))

The secret to cleaning up a PC with a virus is to take Windows totally out of the picture. You need to boot from a CD with LINUX and a good virus program on the CD.

Here is a great one that has never failed me. Just burn the ISO and boot. Be sure and have the network "Hardwired" to update Kaspersky and scan.

SO TRUE

We had a "browser hijacker" virus a few months ago (probably the same issue you have) and had to bring it in to a shop to have it fixed, but they didn't have to wipe the computer clean. My wife spent over 16 hours running anti-virus crap and then called a helpline and they spent another 12 hours. We paid $99 for the helpline and since they couldn't find the problem we got a refund. That's when we brought it in to a local shop.

(I run a local shop) I do manual virus removal and such. There are tons of tricks on removing viruses without reformatting. In a nutshell you want to restore an old registry restore point using another computer, then run a virus removal using that other computer. Then you have cleaning and scanning to do.
