So right now I have a DiMarzio P90 sized Super Distortion in my Edwards LPC. It sounds good for rhythm but doesn't cut it, IMHO for leads. For what DiMarzio calls a humbucker it lacks a lot of the low end character of my JB's and Duncan Customs.

Maybe the nature of the Super Distortion is not yo be very full on the bottom end or gainy.

I talked to MJ at Duncan and she assures me she can do a custom wind on a Duncan Custom or JB that would have all the output and tone of their full sized counterparts. It would cost $175.

Anyone else have a good P90 sized bucker they'd recommend?

Seymour Duncan Phat Cat P - 90's. Now, if you know me, not a big Duncan fan, but I put these in an Epi LP STANDARD and they OWN!! Check them out.

I have the same pickup in the bridge of my 98 Gibson LP special, put up pretty much the same post when I first registered here about 3 years ago, click below:

I'm just gonna sell mine and get either a Gibson Les Paul Studio with either the Rosewood or Ebony fingerboard or a 90's Gibson Explorer.

I actually get good usable rhythm tones from it. It just doesn't have that edge for ripping out leads. I figure I could have SD build me a pickup or route for a full size bucker. It will end up costing about the same. If the guitar didn't play so damn well I'd sell it. For anyone who has had the opportunity to play the Edwards LP's you know what I mean.

You could try the EMG 81 P90 if they still make it, i had a les paul deluxe with one and it killed.

Yea EMG also makes the passive HZ version but they're still like $90 a piece new. I love the way my LP special plays too, actually right now I think the action is too close, but it's been in 1/2 step e tuning, I had the Dimarzio super distortion p90 put in it when I had ghs zakk wylde .010-.060's on it tuned to drop B but just didn't seem to cut it, hence why I'm selling it to get something like a Gibson LP studio, Gibson Explorer or a PRS Standard or Custom

Very interesting thread. I picked up a PRS McCarty SC with Soapbars and have been playing with the idea of swapping them out with a humbucker but don't want to drill holes in the body cavity.

Vintage Vibe also make a direct HB Soapbar replacement but I have no idea how they sound. It's the 5th one down.

Definitely sounds like you want a pup with a different EQ. I love DiMarzios and use them when I can. Have to ask if you have tried different pot values or cap changes and such? The Tone Zone is a killer pup with a warmer tone and slightly less OP. Or the DLX but it seems to have a scooped eq and may not have enough mids for solo tones.

I haven't tried changing pots/caps but I may try that first. I guess it can't hurt. I almost went with the Tone Zone but the dude I talked to at DiMarzio thought it mught be too dark for the mahogany body.
