anybody? i realize i love the EMG 85 sound in the bridge. What passive pickup is the closest?

I'm trying to figure out the same thing. I've got an 85 in the bridge of a maple guitar, and have a couple other maple ones so I'll be doing some experimenting. I've got an Invader coming in and since it's supposed to be pretty dark, we'll see.

Motor City Solution does a great job of sounding like both the 81 and 85 together. the high mids of the 81 and the bottom of the 85.

funny you mentioned maple because My guitar is made of all maple body and neck w/floyd.
I think the EMG 85 excels in the bridge of a maple guitar. EMG 85 is all bass and low mids
with soft highs.

Quick on the draw boys, what can I say? :D

i never use the neck pickup and i dont really like emg's but man i love the 85 really sweet sound for a neck pickup. i personally only buy dimarzios

What guitar? The Solution is awesome but it does not have the same low end vibe like the 85. I love the Solution in my LP's but I did not like it in my Jackson's. It was too tight in the low end for me in those guitars. I have a Hell-Baby in one Jackson and a Nuke in another. Those sound bad-ass now.

Interesting that you say that.

Something tells me the guitar has alot to do with it. I directly compared the EMG 85 i had in a basswood body to the solution and the solution had more bottom end.

according to Wade the Hell Baby has the least and tightest bass of all of his extreme pickups.

I think a cross between a Nuke and the Solution would be an incredible pickup (the snarl of the Solution but the low end of the Nuke).

The hellbabys are also the clearest pickups I have ever tried. Whether or not they have the least amount of bass of all of his pups, they certainly are not lacking. They have this very unique character to them that makes you just want to play. I dont think they sound all that much like EMGs, but they are certainly my favorite pickups.

Bareknuckle Miracle Man has that vibe going on as well.
+1 the Miracle Man was specifically designed to be a passive EMG 81 or 85, depending on which one you order.

theres a youtube vid of a guy doing back to back comparison between the suhr aldrich, and the 85. i'll try to find the link, but they were super close in output and tone for that application.
made me want an aldrich..

here it is. not my style of playing, but gives you an i dea of the pickup character. i like the aldrich in thevid best, and hope to get one soon.

Good clip. The EMGs seem to be slightly clearer/fuller to me. The Aldrich seems to have more upper mid to me.

Haha...that's actually my video comparing the Aldrich and EMGs. Damn a had a lot of hair back then

To clarify, that particular clip actually has the 81 in the bridge, not the 85. In general, I preferred the 85 in the bridge...at that time, I was experimenting, and 81 sounded good too...just a little more cut and crunch.

The 85 is a cool pickup...if you like its sound, why are you trying to replace it with something that sounds similar?

Eric
