Awesome, Matty!

Curious:
I figured the lappy was on the chair for browsing Rig Manager, but I see no USB cable.

Ok that's great and all. But what's the story with the set of tits, top right?
Good eye ya perv

Met PG a couple times in years gone by - personable, humble, fun, totally approachable and just makes ya realize that the "world of guitar" is big and fun. Totally NON ROCKSTAR attitude, and just loves playing for the love of music. And I suppose when you can shred the bejesus out of any guitar available, ya, it's fun to play - but hell the dude took the time to give me pointers and a "vision" and "visual goal setting" and all this kinda cool stuff. SLOW DOWN, PICK ACCURATELY, DON'T WORRY ABOUT SPEED, CONCENTRATE ON THE MUSIC - NOT THE NOTES OF THE FINGERS - LISTEN TO YOURSELF PLAY (as opposed to watching your fingers play - neat reminder that a couple other coveted players have discussed too, The Luke being one of them - listen - don't look - just listen).

Anyway - awesome that you got to chill with one of the best. A memory for life for sure!!
Peace Y'All...
Mojo

Paul is a champion! One of the most down to Earth guys.

Those are great tips.. I listen back to myself now and again and i then ask myself why I was rushing, why so many notes etc.. You realize that what is "fast" sounds even faster and that if you slowed down and picked the notes cleaner, it would still sound fast but just so much better. Same with vibrato.. take the time, let it breathe a bit before you get into this big wide bend. Avoid the Kirk Hammets.

Agree on the tips. Can't tell you how many times I've focused really hard on a difficult phrase/lick and couldn't pull it off. Then I close my eyes and just listen and boom...the hands just magically did it. Especially with Travis/Atkins alternating bass stuff. And a metronome is crucial for me otherwise I always try to speed up until I hit 'sloppy'.

So cool, Fig! I think I spy my old Eggie cab there at the bottom. Please tell me Paul played through that one! :D

Best thing RIGHT there...

That is cool as hell. I love Paul Gilbert too, he's one of the only instructional videos that I really felt like a friend was teaching me, made a connection, made it fun, explained well and great instruction too. Just all around one of my all time favorites. You're a lucky dude for sure.

I saw Paul at a small venue in January. One of the best shows I've been to, his current backing band is KILLER. Of course, he is too. We waited inside the venue after the show for him to come out and sign stuff - the venue staff told us to fuck off and that no one would be coming out and signing things as the band had to leave for NYC that night. We left, kind of disappointed. As we walked around the back of the venue to the lot, we saw a small mass of people surrounding the tour bus. Paul came out a minute or two later, and signed stuff and took pictures with everyone there. It was very noticeable that he was tired and probably just wanted to lay down, but he didn't complain at all; just hung with the fans for a few minutes.

Yeah, he gets it done....He was listening to others play leads and then effortlessly reproducing them better....No searching for notes, ever....It was wild to witness....

Hmm... sounds like one of those "I might as well give up guitar right now" days, man.

Glad I wasn't there in that respect.

You know, one would think....But it was quite the contrary....Paul has such a passion for playing and talking music that he makes things just "make sense." Now I can't play 1/8 of what he does but I can certainly respect the fact that he's a down-to-Earth guy who just loves music...He was very cool, humble, and amazing at the same time...Was an experience for the books for me personally....
