Paul Gilbert live: WOW!

I was lucky enough to see some of the greatest: Luke, Yngwie, Angus, Slash, Aldrich, Norum, Vai, Beck, Clapton, Morse, Kotzen, Petrucci, Zakk... Then i saw Mr. Big live the other day... Man, im impressed!

Great, tasty, accurate playing and even some good backin vocals and killer guitar tone: Not super gainy, his Fireman and probably some kind of boost and a Marshall stack.


I think its silly to rank guitar players, but for me Paul Gilbert is up there. Of course id like to add, Mr. Big is an awesome band, they are all great and have cool songs. Since im not a big instrumental rock fan, i imagine i wouldn't be so impressed if it was Paul with his solo project.

Saw him live twice. We all know that he's an amazing and very technical player, but people often overlook what a truly great musician he is.
 
I have caught him solo and with Mr. Big. Floored me both times. Mr. Big is a great live band.
 
Paul is amazing. I never really got into Mr. Big but I am a huge Racer X fan.
 
Next to Marty Friedman, Pablo takes the cake as far as I'm concerned...just sheer guitar genius and an incredible level of humility to go with it unlike some others
 
I took lessons with him privately at his apartment on Sycamour in '86. The guys has the ear of a jazz pianist. Just staggering how deep his talent goes.
 
Paul is the best! Such a joy to watch. I've spent hours watching him play on Youtube.

Fun fact, I own one of his old Ampeg 4x12 cabs, with the pink baffle. My uncle gave me this beat up Ampeg cab with 4 ripped Peavey speakers in it (he's not the smartest man in the world...) when I was in Jr. High. It didn't have a baffle/front cover on it. I fixed it up, put some V30s in it and used it for a bit. Thing weighs a ton.

A few years later, my uncle is cleaning up his house, getting ready to move to a different place, and he finds the baffle for the cab, but it's beat to shit. He calls me up, tells me he found it, and it's neon pink. I immediately thought about Paul's cabs from the Racer X days. I do some reasearch, figure out my cab is the same model (Ampeg V4, IIRC), so I took some pictures of the cab, wrote down the serial number on the inside, and e-mailed paul. Paul gets back to me, tells me he's pretty sure it's his cab. I tried to give it back to him (I had replaced the tolex so it didn't look like shit anymore), but he told me to keep it. It's in storage at my parent's place in Illinois now, sans speakers.

Someday I'll get it back from them and use it again. It sounds pretty good, but it's heavy as hell. I'm more of a 1x12/2x12 guy, but I'll still get it up and running again some time.

I lived on Sycamore off of Hollywood Blvd when I went to M.I. Back in 1984.........is that where your're talking about?
 
Obviously I'm a fan. Saw them in 89 at a small club in Mpls, our drummers girlfriend worked at a radio station and we all got the meet n greet with them. Both Paul and Billy were very cool to talk to..no offense to the other two lol...

I was at GIT back then, and took some open seminars with Paul. Along with the talent, what struck me most is what a genuinely nice guy he was. Considering that he was KING of that place back then, it would have been easy to let his ego blow up, but he couldn't have been any nicer. He couldn't have been more than 19 or 20 at the time, but really had a handle on life in general, let alone the music business and guitar.
 
Saw him with Satch and Petrucci on a G3 tour. One of the unique players out there.
 
Saw them live in a small club in Cleveland years ago, before that acoustic song became a hit. I was right in front. Enuff Znuff opened. never heard of them before, and haven't heard of them since. Also saw them open for Rush on the Presto tour. They rocked.

Paul is also a huge Rush fan. Has a Rush Tribute band called Sigmund and the Seamonsters with Portnoy.

That's very cool. The first real rock album I ever listened to was "A Farewell to Kings"...got my first guitar(an Arbor lol) a month after...
 
His right hand is incredible. Of course all of his playing is in general but his picking really floors me sometimes.
 
I saw him back late 80's early 90's in a small venue in Houston TX on a Mr Big tour...2- feet away ans in awe ;) he was excellent live, he was using those Ampeg amps that had a key and the logo lit up.

Ahh...the Lee Jackson Ampeg VL series...had a Crate Stealth that has the same circuit. Great Sleeper amp..2-300$ used..
