Paul Waggoner of BTBAM is one of my favourite guitarrists

They were in C standard, so still a standard tuning atleast. And I am with you, all of my bands material is in a Standard tuning as well bc I am just over playing in drop tunings.

Same... I've played in two bands using drop tunings...I just don't like the way they're used. Plus with all the clean and chordal stuff I use and the different chord shapes, I lose alot of the artiuclation in my playing when I use drop tunings.

The guy I'm currently forming a band with wants to use drop tunings.. I told him I'm either using both drop and standard, standard, or nethier. If he writes songs better in drop tunings then great, but I don't so I won't use them for my writing. :P Sorry. blabbed on there. #

Honestly, BTBAM and Gojira use standard tunings, C# and D and they're soooo much more "brutal" than all these metalcore bands that use drop tunings. IMO.

Though drop tuning is really useful for the type of music I play - sludge metal/doom/stoner rock.

I like drop tunings for that kinda thing, do you prefer the sound or the ease of playing?

To be honest, I've played Boneyards by Parkway Drive in standard tuning to show my friend you don't need dropped tunings to play 'bro0tz', but if you feel it gives you a preferred sound then by all means use it.

I think it's a bit of both.

Stoner metal requires a bassy tone, which is why amps like Orange, Matamp, Ampeg, etc. work so well. And then you have classic fuzz pedals like the D*A*M Meathead providing enormous amounts of chewy bass and sickly gain. So it makes sense to add even more bass, a more natural bass, by detuning your guitar. That's not to say standard wouldn't work just as well. It's a matter of taste.

There is also the playability factor to think about, like you say. The lower the tuning the thicker the strings can be. That adds girth and SRV-type meatiness. And it also allows for really big bends which are common in doom.

There is absolutely no reason, like you say, to demand low tuning for the br00talz, no matter what kind of metal you're playing. Sometimes it's just more ideal for the band you're involved in.

I think drop tunings rule for sludge rock! I also like the whole tune the low E down an octave for sludge rock too.

I can't really knock on metalcore bands bc I guess my band is considered one as much as I hate it hahaha

They have some of my favorite recto tones too. Roadster and a 2 channel dual recto if I recall correctly

That's right. :) Rackmount recto and a Roadking. Actually both guitarrists have quite a modest setup for the complexity of their playing and their skill IMO.

Note to the morons who are shooting those video's...show us the gear! What is the point in filming a rig walk through unless your going to actually show us the gear. Geeze.

This, especially the last part, truer words have never been spoke.

I'm FUCKING SICK of the local bro0tz metalcore bands tuning so low it makes the music unenjoyable.. by chugging on the low C they think it's a brutal awesome metal riff when infact it's just an annoying gayass breakdown.

If playing doom/sludge, which I'm starting to do with getting into bands like Neurosis, Isis, Cult of Luna etc, I'll use a drop tuning in most cases. But if playing metal I'd stay in a standard tuning, I'd go lower to D or C# if I feel the music needs it and to compliment the singer's range and/or vocal style. Which is how I decide on tunings, I'll stard in standard, then try different tunings to see what fits best.

The fact of the matter is (in my eyes anyway) the music that drop/down tunings is used for in the metal scene to make playing heavily easier and more br00tz. rather than to improve the tonallity or help match the singer's vocal styles. in alot of cases anyway.

Haha. that's a good point. They do it better with Paul Waggoner though. I'd like a few MTV Cribs style overview shots though.

My last one was a metalcore band, because of the covers the rhythm guitarrist/drummer chose to play, I decided not to object as I wanted to give it a shot, everyone thought of us as a metalcore band though. I never wrote anything remotely core unless by the drummer's request to put a breakdown in or something.

I hated being called a core band. Ughh..

I've got Alaska, Colors, Colors Live w/DVD, and The Great Misdirect, and I quite enjoy all of them. I don't get the hate they get on HCAF, but then again there are a lot of ass-clowns over there.

I'd hate to be called a "core" musician/band. I know I won't be but I would hate it. Not that I have a general distaste for "core" music, I just don't appreciate the image and how it's intertwined with the music. Same goes for death metal or indie, or anything for that matter.
