Peavey or Crate

So there is a Peavey Ultra Plus and a Crate stealth 100 watt both the overpriced the Crate is 350 and the Peavey is 500 I know these are less then high end. However my nephews birthday is coming and these are 2 decent budget amps which one is the better buy in this case any thoughts and opinions.

Stealth all day...not even a contest IMO. Just spray contact cleaner into the fx loop I/o and clean the jacks as they tend to get dirty, it should be good to go after that. I'd take that amp over a few others I've had here.....

I've got a stealth 50 and it's monster, and probably the quietest amp I own as well. Construction-wise, it's not the greatest, though. The peavey wins from a build standpoint, but I do like the Stealths tone better.

No way I'd pay that for either, though.

Stealth for 350 is average, I've paid 150 for a 50w combo. And as the previous poster said, quiet as hell even boosted. Best Lee Jackson circuit according to Mark Cameron....

I agree about the stealth but I'm so curious about the Ultra but 5150s go for the same price it should be at 300. However the stealth would be a great first amp I've owned one loved it hmmm....

I recently scored a Peavey Ultra 212 with footswitch from Craig's List for 200 bucks. three channel all tube 212 combo. Great cleans, excellent crunch, and awesome lead channel, with more gain than any sane person would ever need. Nice and quiet, even with single coils. It is a heavy mofo though!

Take the Crate logo off or put it in a different headshell and no one would give you shit about playing it. Good FX loop, 3 channels with a very good clean AND reverb....best bang for the buck used amp out there. At least IMO. 5153s are good values also but used are 2-3x as much....

I've played both, and I'd take the Crate HANDS DOWN over ANY Peavey...INCLUDING an original block letter 5150 (I had one).

I have, and currently gig a xxx regularly. But the crate sounds better, and is dead quiet. My Stealth just has some technical issues that keep it out of the regular gig lineup.

-the XXX is a very underated amp,....just like most high gain peavey's,.....due mostly to ignorance,...-(and actually the second generation ULTRA +,..was originally a GEORGE LYNCH sig amp)-.i had one for years, once you can bias it correctly,..-(use 6l6's and put the selector switch in the el34 position and basically max the bias trim pots,..bet you'll never sell the XXX)-

-the only problem with PEAVEY's is they come from the factory biased ice cold,..why??? I have no fcking idea!!...the VTM/ULTRA series and more are all based off the MARSHALL 800 series platform.

-sorry to hear about your STEALTH,..i had one,..was awesome,.......channel #2 is where the magic is on the STEALTH...

-well,..no. I think it depends on what kind of music you play. For brutal metal, I'd take the 5150, but for a more '80's thing Stealth all the way.

That is a huge factor in which amp to buy. The Lee Jackson Crate (and Ampeg) sound good but are constantly in repair. The USA Peaveys are tanks that seem to never break for anyone...and I think sound better too. That may be preference, but repair bills and malfunctioning amps that can't be gigged are useless headache
