Im in the market for another amp, have 1000 $ to spend.

I play heavy rock, like DIO, Rush etc.

The new amp will will be sitting on top of a Marshall 1936 cab 2x12 with the stock 75s in it.

I have a Laboga Mr. Hector and a DSL now, looking for something a little different.

Im really confused about the the PV amps with 5150, 6505, 6505+, 3220 or whatever.

just looking for a good thick OD tone.

whats the best bet.

There is a rect-0-verb head FS on my local CL for 900. but these PV amps seem to have a little more tone on the youtube clips ive seend.

Peavey tends to voice their amps in the mid range, are capable of producing sweet to obnoxious gain, and are simple to dial in & reliable. Mesa tends to voice their amps darker in comparison. They tend to be low-mid voiced and contain a top end sizzle. They are also much more tedious to dial in because their EQs affect one another instead of being independent of each other. They are also known to be reliable.

You most likely know where they fall price-wise. I would check out a Rectoverb or Mark 4 to get a taste of the Mesa sound. A 5150II/6505+ (Same amp) or JSX/XXXII (Again same amp) would give you a great idea of what Peavey offers. Good luck!

I think the Mesa would be more different from your dsl. Not saying its the answer but as far as different goes

I own and enjoy both of them. It sounds like the Peavey JSX might be a good fit....a lot of ppl seem to like'em with 6L6's. I've also heard good things about them using KT77's. As far as Mesa...also consider a Mark III, besides a Mark IV which is also a great amp.

Mesa F Series might be a good fit, they are in your price range and are easier to dial in than many other models.

Need to elaborate a bit more on what you're definition of "thick OD tone" is - as that can be taken many different ways.

5150's and 5150 II's have their benefits and drawbacks, IMHO you have to be careful with tube placement and really particular what tubes you use as it will make or break how the amplifier sounds. Sounds absolutely stupidly common sense based but really you can make a 5150 sound like shit if you dont know what tubes go where or what tubes work best in them. I am being honest.

Mesa's are a whole different ballgame. different way of dialing them in and they have a different voicing overall. Retoverbs are 50W last time i checked, again that is a whole different ballgame compared to 5150's, 5150's are loud amplifiers, SLO's are louder yet.

If you're looking for a dark thick tone, i would recommend a mesa roadster on the used market, they are considerably close to your price range and sound phenominal. if you want a more lead-based amplifier go with a mark series mesa. If you want something that is......self defined is the only way to put it, and has potential but will require work to get there, then get the 5150. once you get one dialed in with proper bias and tubes they turn from an average amplifier into a great amplifier.

FWIW Peavey's are notoriously picky about what speakers you use - they prefer V30's over anything else. Not sure what you're running but speakers can make a 5150 sound like dog shit in a hurry.

My 5150 wasn't that picky on speakers. I liked it through Emminence Legends. My guitarist runs his Triple Rec through those too. 5150 will to fine on T75s.

In fact there is a guy selling a 6505 on CL, which is the same amp as a 5150, for like $650 OBO. He really needs to get rid of it, and nobody seems to want it. If I had the money, I'd grab it.

If you are not in a hurry, wait until the amp party. We're going to shootout a stock 5150, an modded 5150, a modded 6505+, and an EVH 5150 III. We could always drag a mesa in there too to see how it stacks up. That's what the shootout room is for!
