For JUST death metal, hands down the Rockmaster.

This is kind of like comparing a Mercedes to a Volkswagen, isn't it?

There's an FJA rockmaster for like 4bills on ebay
Bang for buck I bet that's a better piece than a 1500 triaxis- and may be a better piece regardless

I'm not sure if the price has changed recently any but I've seen multiple unmodified Rockmasters for under $200 in the past. I paid $125 for one with a footswitch.

Well, maybe if you're going by price alone, sure.

For deathmetal it won't matter. :D
Tone is important regardless of genre. If you're playing death metal, 99% of the time you're going to be on the high gain channel and the majority of that time you're going to be playing riffs (not solos). And you'll likely need a tight and cutting tone. While the Triaxis is an amazing preamp, I think that the high gain rhythm tones are lacking overall for this application. The preamp does amazing lead tones and clean tones.

I've owned a few VW that would smoke most Mercedes.

The Rockmaster is nice, but not what I think of when I think of death metal. Actually, when I think of death metal, I think of sevenstring.org!

The RM is prone to intermittent shorts with the switching jacks. The Tri is a finesse piece.

What about an ENGL 530?

I have both available. The Rockmaster is modded. The jacks aren't an issue once I go thru them. The Triaxis is stock.

What does your mod do? well, besides fixing the switching issue... I've heard the switching relays are underrated, but it always seemed like it was shorting out since it was sensitive to movement.

^^

Sorry but from all the vids, the Gainiac 2 doesn't sound death metal at all!

My stuff is all custom so I can tweak it many ways. Overall it cleans up the fizz, gives it a meatier voicing, tightens the bottom, and smooths it out a little.
