My buddy is considering buying a Peavey Triumph 60 amp, he plays a good deal of lead guitar. The seller of the triumph is asking $300 shipped.

I haven't been able to find much in the way of how these amps are viewed. Anyone own one or had one in the past that can comment?

I owned a Triumph 60 combo back in the late 80's. Great saturated gain sound, not sure I'd pay $300 for one now though.

Do you remember how the clean was and did you ever try pedals into it? I am also curious what you would recommend as a tube combo for $300 used, that is the budget and its tight.

I have a Triumph 60 1x12. Had it since new... YES I am old as it was new in the 80s. Needs a little love as the tubes light up, but no sound and there are no lights coming on the amp itself, but it really is just a conversation piece now.

Biggest drawback one EQ for all three channels, so it was basically cascading gains - clean to dirty to searing. You'll get a great tone in one of the three settings, but not all.

It is ungodly loud, I used it to push a cab and the 1x12 as a monitor for myself.

PS Maybe I'll swap out all the tubes (think 5 pre x 2 power IIRC) to see if that brings her back. Now I'm missing her more!

Ironically I bought one off of GC just a few months back... I played it at a soundcheck for a gig and ended up running my backup rig (POD). I ended up shipping it back and Marshalling up in the end. It's more gritty distortion than anything for what I noticed. GREAT for Blues/Rock type stuff but if you're into playing heavier forms of music, it'd still work okay but you'd need a boost of some sort... LOUD as all get-out too!!
