Peavey XXX II ... What's the dirt?

JSX has a noise gate as well. Purchased mine used - mint condition for $550 about 2 years ago and all channels sound great!

id love to try one. i have the Ultra Plus, the grand daddy of this and the XXX. its pretty beastly...you want metal grind, the Ultra channel is the ticket there. i can only imagine the XXX, JSX, and XXX II are even more modern sounding and probably a little more refined. this demo sounded pretty wicked.

for an Ultra Plus example heres mine and my buddy's cover of Carnivore's Carnivore. all rhythms were a Schecter Hellraiser FR straight into the Ultra Plus, through a JCM 800 cab, GT75 is miced up. sounds like the XXX-XXXII can get similar tones.

This or the 6505+ is what I'm looking at. Want big grinding tones in studio. Along lines of Devildriver.

Can't speak much about this model, but I had 2 XXX's catch on fire at home. One had 12" active flames out of the back of the amp. Power to the house was verified by Tennessee Valley Authority, they produce it, at 126.7 volts at the pole and 3% voltage drop at the outlet. Peavey just told me, wow, that isn't good. I got rid of both of these.... Hope the new model is much better.

So Bugera did in fact model their amps after Peavey; down to flames and all! Impressive!

126VAC is a bit on the high side, but should be within spec of the amp (even ignoring the 3% voltage drop to the plug). Most products should be spec'ed to a tolerance of at least 120VAC +/- 10% which is 132VAC to 108VAC. If peavey is baulking at 126VAC, that is concerning....

Ok but does anyone play the jsx / xxx 2 which is the same amp ? How is it next to the 6505+ ?

Also everything in life can fail cars other amps. This is not limited to peavey. How many thousands of amps has peavey sold ? How many still kicking ? How many have caught fire ?

I think these are the amps that High on Fire uses.

JSX destroys the 6505+ in every way in my humble opinion. I have a JSX and a 5153 and they are both great amps . The JSX will hang with the 5153 any day of the week.

I have a JSX and 6505.
The JSX is sharper, tighter, more surgical. Like a finely tuned machine.
The 6505 is thicker, looser, with more hair. Like a wild rabid animal.
Neither needs a boost, but the 6505 benefits more from one. Keeps the lows in check and lets you dial back the insane level of preamp gain.
The JSX is plug in and play. I love the crunch channel personally. The palm mutes are incredibly focused. Like a mini concussion grenade each time you chug.

new xxl user here. it's the ss version of the xxx. i've only had it about a month and haven't really wailed on it in a band setting yet. after doing a bit of tweaking with this amp i do have the agree with d-rock on this one. they can be a bit tricky to dial in. given the number of voicing options on the xxl and the rather broad range of the tone and gain controls there are lots of tonal options available. i've sort of focused on getting my single coils to sound the way i want them to and hope the other things fall into place. while i don't really need a boost it takes them quite well imho.. though i have found that the xxl seems to like buffered pedals over true bypass. ymmv.
i did hear a guy using a xxx a week or two ago and he had his dialed in to sound quite marshally.. with just a tad more grit.

XXX and XXX 2 are different amps.

XXX is now the 3120

XXX 2 is the late JSX

Like everyone said, is just the JSX re-branded with Joe with Marshall.

If you get one, pull the EL34s and go 6L6s (or atleast put some KT77s or 6ca7s) as to my ears EL34 variants in the XXX/JSX just make the two gain channels honk too much and sound too close to one another. Putting in the glass I mentioned allows a greater difference in tonal character to come out for each channel.

About the only EL34 that I think isn't too honky and gives a fuller tone is the 34BSTRs from Ruby.

All others are just terrible sounding to my ears.

YMMV

My old band had a Peavey endorsement. Our other guitarist had a 6505+ and I used(still have) a XXX. I liked the XXX much better. YMMV.

Wow i never realized that the XXXII was the same as the JSX! you can pick up a jsx head for 500$ on ebay and probably far less from guitarcenters web site.. I loved the sound in that one demo, sounds very powerful and tight... Just blew my cash on a 6505+ and a randall RT503 Head...

Chris Caffery was using JSX live and in studio back when he did his first solo tour. I was shocked at how huge that amp could sound.

I have el cheapo Svetlana EL34's in my JSX. The amp sounds great. Never experienced any honking with the amp, ever.
