So... first time I'm building a pedal board. Used to be a plug straight to the tube amp guy... Now I'm in need of some basic guidance here.

In my current chain I have:
-tuner
-bb preamp for boosts
-detox eq (for cleaning my amp signal)
-chorus
-delay
-reverb

Any "error" in my logic?

Also... Should I connect the pedal to the effect loop on the back of my Cherry Bomb? Right now I'm conecting guitar to pedal board into amp input.

Have no idea on what's the purpose of the effect loop on the back of my amp

Help is very much welcome guys.

You will have quite some trouble taming a reverb pedal if it is not in your effects loop. I personally run my reverbs/delays/chorus effects in my loop, and run my boosts/ODs etc in front of the amp. AKA the 4 cable method.

Definitely reverb and delay in loop. Some chorus pedals sound better in the input of the amp. You will need to experiment with the chorus.

I run all time modulated effects in loop... ie.. delay, chorus, reverb.. I find boosts in loops are great for just pushing volume a bit for solos.... in front of amp hits the preamp section more and will color tone a bit more without the volume boost. I don't have your setup but heres how I run my pedal board.

Guitar>tuner>wah>mxr phaser>amp.

Loop send>clean boost>delay>loop return.

If I had a chorus and/or reverb... I would throw in fx signal chain as well... and if in order.. Id go chorus, delay, reverb. Just my 2 cents.. hope that helps a bit or gives you an idea. Cheers

Wow! Definitely learned something new!

Will put chorus/delay then reverb into the loop.

What do you guys think of the correct placement for the detox EQ? Basically its like if you rolled the volume knob of your guitar till you get a clean sound out of a tube amp.

Thanks so much for the info

ps... The FX loop basically brings the signal in After the preamp section and before power amp section... returning it to power amp section... That's why time and modulated effects work well here... you don't get the preamp distortion and gain that can really overload the signal level( -10dbV for pedals) of those effects. Parallel loops are great(which I believe) the CB has cuz you're able to blend the amount or dry and wet signal... there's alot of voltage and ohm math that goes into it as well, but it's all beyond me..lol.

Putting an effect or pedal in front of amp is actually starting the signal there and it's going thru all stages..pre and power... Tuners, wahs.. some choruses work well here... as well as some phasers and most ODs. Some like chorus and/or phasers in loop... some out front. I prefer and actuall OD pedal in front of amp... I prefer clean boosts in loop as a 'solo' boost... since it only hits power amp section. Many more here more knowledgeable than me.. much including Steve... the builder..lol.

Very very thankful with your explanation sir. Makes a lot of sense now!

No problem mate... hope that helps a bit. Cheers

Another option if you want to run two amps at the same time is buy a stereo chorus pedal, like a Boss CE5 and run it out in front of the amp splitting the signal there. I have a Decimator pedal first in my chain, followed by a Boss tuner and into a CE5. Then one out straight into a Mesa Mark 2C, the other out into a Boss OD1X and an eq pedal then to my Jubilee. Simple cheap and effective to run two amps.

Detox is a great pedal. I have 2 of them, each on different pedalboards. Run it last on the input side.

guitar/tuner/bb/detox -----------> front of amp
amp loop send ---------------> chorus/delay/reverb -------------------> amp loop return

-I guess I'm on the other side of the coin,..i find putting any modulation effect in the loop causes them to get lost,..i put chorus & delay in front-(as well as any clean boost like an EQ)-....every thing else in the loop...

-if ya have a noise issue a BOSS NS-2 work's just as good as the decimator-(rack mounted)-noise surpressor I had,..

Guys you've been great. Very informative and nice suggestions.
