Pedal Pawn: We filmed a Philip Sayce Soundcheck (& it was INSANE)
I did meet Philip right when he moved to LA. I used to work at Hollywood Vintage, and he stopped by right after he moved from Canada, e he was nothing short of a beyond fantastic human being.
His playing was also something I would've never expected... insanely great!
I've watched him play multiple times at the store, when he would stop by to check out the inventory, and we even went to Amp Rehearsal a few times with our amps and guitars just to geek out on the "recently" acquired gear. And man, watching him playing guitar, in a rehearsal room, for 4 to 6 hours almost that without a single break, we would only stop to switch amps or guitars, was one of the most surreal musical experiences I've ever had in my whole life. And I've been, full time, in the music business since when I was 22.
The man has the chops, the speed, the musicality and the feeling that very few other musicians achieved all together. Sykes being one of them. Matter of fact, I've mention about Philip to Sykes, about a year before he passed. Next time I've spoke with him he told me he really liked how much "fire and soul" Philip had when he played the guitar. Sykes own words.
Yep... Philip is the real deal. Amazing human being, great song writer, super passionate about music, incredible ear for guitar tones, gear nerd(like most of us), and one of the best guitar players there is.
Almost forgot... the dude can sing like a motherfucker too!!!
And if you have the chance to go see him play at the Backed Potato, don't pass on that chance. It'll worth every penny!
The dude is a force of nature.
