Pedalboard buffers? Rack Systems?

Interested to know Dave and other's thoughts on buffers for pedal boards. I see many examples of pedal boards including those made for pros with 6,7,8 pedals but no buffers. Since many high end pedals are true bypass, does this mean there is some accepted signal loss?

Dave, do you have any rules of thumb you go by?
 
There is always a buffer of some sort on the boards. Not always first, it just depends on the setup.
