People who only claim the first 2-3 albums of said band are the best....

Why are you such losers and try hards?

You're an insta sword swallower if you're one of those people who think they are edgy and cool who liked a band on their first 2- 3 records when everything else after is better or a masterpiece.

Case in point...

Metallica - MOP, Garage Days and Black Album they are at their peak (3rd, 4th and 6th album)
Deftones - White Pony, Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan (3rd, 6th and 7th album)
In Flames - Colony, Clayman, Come Clarity (4th, 5th and 7th album)

I can keep going but looking forward to some debate here

I don't think it's edgy I just think Metallica sucks ass after Ride the Lightning.

Iron Maiden sucks ass when you compare the shrieking harpy Bruce to frontman Paul Di'Anno.

And Van Halen just plain sucks ass from the very first album. DLR is an embarrasment.

Case in point:

Pantera and Death never sucked ass at all.
 
The term "Best" is completely subjective, but I would counter the op with:

Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard Of Ozz, Diary Of A Madman
Queensryche - Rage For Order, Operation Mindcrime
Skid Row - Self-titled, Slave To The Grind
Extreme - Pornograffitti, III Sides To Every Story

Queensryche - 3 and 4 (Op Mind and Empire)

Queensryche fans are the worst. They ALWAYS defend RFO and Promised Land. Not bad albums but FAR from their best. Why do they always discredit Empire, which is OVERWHELMINGLY their best album. Why fight it? Oh....my bad, because it ended up on MTV. Deal with it. The production at the time was 2nd to none. It is so fkn good. As a big QR fan I at least admit that album was their peak and for reason. Record sales don't lie.

I was kind of going with the general consensus with Blizzard Of Ozz. No More Tears is actually my second favorite Ozzy Album (after Diary).

But Ozzy started going downhill with Ozzmosis and Rage For Order shits all over Empire. :D

I think there's definitely a pattern when it comes to this.

I'd say most bands and artists, especially if taken "overall" across all genres, blow their loads in the first few albums.

It's only the more-rare ones who don't rest on their laurels and actually improve.
 
i wanted to start a topic on this too, but i somehow forgot about it...

just 1 of each category out of my head:
AiC debut was great. steep downhill from there!
sepultura is a bit like pantera. definitley developed their unic style in the early 90s. their early stuff sucked. Arise is the first one i can appreciate, but Chaos A.D. easily tops that

When it isn’t: Steely Dan. (Am I allowed to like them in this forum? Feels very TGP.)

My fav album of ozzy’s is Tribute; which is odd considering the studio tone RR was sporting at the time. Then no more tears. (Album- not song).
The tribute recording to me is like a live version of VH1. So over the top for me that I became a really good air guitarist. Then started taking my real guitar much more seriously.

The Beatles revolver was clearly was a break away from the bubblegum rock, followed shortly by Sgt pepper, white album, abbey road. Love them or hate them… they improved their song making skills by branching out and creating sounds by a load of different instruments. Mr Kite… wtf is that other than a circus melody on vinyl. And it worked. The Rolling Stones followed suit.
 
I haven’t liked anything Dream Theater has done after Kevin Moore left.

Many times a band has personnel changes that change their sound, or worse, they become stagnant.
 
Yeah, Steely Dan's middle albums were their best. Their last 2... I just pretend they don't exist.
 
Judas Priest is a great example of a band that didn't really nail their thing until you get a few in.

Unleashed in the East (while it does obviously have some material from the second record) is most "peak", capturing the vibe following Killing Machine. As someone who loved that band (and still really likes them, but sort of veered away) I would say Killing Machine, Unleashed and British Steel are the best 3 in a row. And then you have sort of a bumpy road. Point of Entry is ok, Screaming is ok, Defenders is great, Turbo is meh, Ram it Down is meh, Painkiller rocks.

Slayer too, Reign in Blood to Seasons is undeniable peak.

I agree about Queenryche, Empire is the best, and anyone saying otherwise is just being a dumbass. It has everything, radio songs, rocking songs, outrageously good production, and less flock of seagulls haircuts.

Savatage, Hall of the Mountain King to Streets.
 
It's true for a lot of bands though. Lamb Of God comes to mind. Their first 3 albums rip, then it was a slow decline after that.

But if you take Pantera, they just got better and better up till Trendkill.
 
I seem to be a middle-era guy with most of my favorites being in that 3rd to 6th album zone.
That's my opinion with Mettalica, Slayer, Morbid Angel, Carcass, ect...

Even many "first" albums are not really the first because they had either demos or were using a different band name before the albums we often label as first.
Deicide was Amon, Death was Mantis, ect..

I agree. The energy and excitement of a new young band and their goal of showing everyone what they’re made of is truly awesome.

I always think of Motley Crue. Their “Too Fast For Love” album is just killer and fresh! “Shout at the Devil” is good too. Then I’m not sure what happened after that. Lol
 
I think it’s more like once a band makes a killer record, they’ll have one unbroken streak of great stuff, and once they make a lesser record after that streak, it signifies they’ve fallen off and will never be as good again.

Whether that is their first album or their fifth, or whether that streak only lasts one album or ten, that’s kinda how I’ve always seen it work.

Almost all the best records made by the best bands are consecutive. Once the streak is broken, that’s it.
