People who only claim the first 2-3 albums of said band are the best....

I don't think it's edgy I just think Metallica sucks ass after Ride the Lightning.

Iron Maiden sucks ass when you compare the shrieking harpy Bruce to frontman Paul Di'Anno.

And Van Halen just plain sucks ass from the very first album. DLR is an embarrasment.

Case in point:

Pantera and Death never sucked ass at all.
Yep

It's always a case by case thing for me. With some artists the first three are like the OG Star Wars trilogy, some things after (Revenge of the Sith) come close, but nothing after captures a certain signature magic and raw energy the originals had.

In other cases talent, direction, unique identity/sound, and production come together to create something great after a band hones it's chops over years, or go through particular line up changes.

There are definitely some bands that peaked after the first 2 or 3:
Lääz Rockit. I mean...Know Your Enemy (album #4) is abso-fuckin-lutely PEAK!
Or Death... I mean, Leprosy is fun and all...but it ain't no Human or Symbolic (#4 and #6)
or...Kreator. Extreme Aggression = #4. Maybe Coma of Souls too...#5.

Hmmm...maybe there's a pattern here. Not sure if it's an individual thought tho'... :geek:

who uses the words "try hard" these days?? it's 2025 gatekeeper is the term :ROFLMAO:

I agree. The energy and excitement of a new young band and their goal of showing everyone what they’re made of is truly awesome.

I always think of Motley Crue. Their “Too Fast For Love” album is just killer and fresh! “Shout at the Devil” is good too. Then I’m not sure what happened after that. Lol
I think Vince discovered bacon cheeseburgers....

All joking aside, Too Fast for Love is awesome. So raw in almost a punk way. I love Shout at the Devil though. Theatre of Pain sucks.

There are some bands that really age like a fine wine. I feel Clutch has made some of their best records in the last 10 years (still like the first ones though). Blast Tyrant was a serious mile stone for them though. Still amazed at how great it sounds coupled with great material.
I think the only reason that some bands peter out after a couple is because they’re not actually that creative in the writing department. They had years to get the first album ready and then 6-8 months to do another, while touring etc etc. Not many bands have that level of drive and creativity to work through that. Especially when the 2nd album was just leftovers from what didn’t go on the first album. Once they have to truly write from scratch on a time table, it can get tricky.
Shit, VH was using ideas 10-15 years after they were first demo’d/germinated to build up later albums.

I normally just ignore the OG comments with amps, bands and general comments that music sucks these days. People are welcome to their opinions but I believe newer amps are better, bands can get better and there are tons of new awesome music, you just have to do the work to find it, no different than weeding through countless shitty 80’s and 90’s bands to find the good stuff. But it’s easier to search these days than it was in the way-back.

If I were forced to explain the phenomenon by distilling it all down, I'd say that a key factor is the novelty of the gear and making music, which of course wears off in-tandem with an increase in apathy, be it because wealth set in as a result of success or whatever.

Whoa man . Thats like 4 of my fav bands and exactly how I feel . Change an album or 2 . Like Reroute to Remain is just amazing . Fuck I love it
I love "Soundtrack to your escape" - one of the albums that really hit home for me. Still love it to this day.

Theater of Pain is horrid, except for the cover of Smokin in the boy's room. (Fuck "Home Sweet Home") Hell, Nikki said that he got off the heroin just long enough to write that album in a hurry and as soon as he was done he went right back to the needle. I think the album after that, Girls, Girls, Girls, is killer.

i wanted to start a topic on this too, but i somehow forgot about it...

just 1 of each category out of my head:
AiC debut was great. steep downhill from there!
sepultura is a bit like pantera. definitley developed their unic style in the early 90s. their early stuff sucked. Arise is the first one i can appreciate, but Chaos A.D. easily tops that
All IMO of course
Alice In Chains has never put out a bad record that I am aware of. Their worst moment are the aspirations of most rock and metal bands.
