Came in last week. Peters Hydra. Have been busy playing it and comparing to my other amps. I feel it is the best amp I have owned! Not very good at describing it but here goes.........

Very tight and focused but with plenty of bloom, so to speak. Very mean voiced. Tight bottom end, not loose at all. With plenty of it on tap. Bottom end is very important to me. An amp need to hit you in the chest with a heavy thud. The Hydra delivers. Very smooth high/top end, not ear peircing. I can actually handle standing in front of it for long periods of time. One thing I noticed right off the bat is the note seperation/definition. At high gain it still has the ability to seperate notes, most high gainers do not do this well at all. The mids are plentiful and very nicely voiced. It does not turn to shit the higher the mids are like my UL does. The UL has ton of mids but turn to poo at really high settings.

I had James put EL34's in it. Ended up with KT88's. Really like how they bring an even more positive thud and smooth things out to my ear. Also experimented with preamp tubes. I seem to always go back to Ruby. Very easy to bias the amp with the external bias points.

Forgot to mention the gain. It has gain in spades. At noon on the gain it is plenty. Actually, I started with all the settings on 12 oclock and it sounded great! Just required minor tweaks to achieve what works for my setup.

This amp cuts in a mix with little to no effort. It will stomp most amps in this category. It almost felt as if my other amps have blankets over the cabs. A guy will really be heard with this beast.

What surprised me too was the versitility of the amp. It goes from classic tones to full on metal on the overdrive channel with ease. Very easy to dial in multiple tones, especially with the Edge and crunch fucntions. They add hair or tighten things up when engaged. The clean channel is one of the most versitile as well. I am not much of a clean player but it sounds great. (Lame description)

The effects loop is very transparent and took my cheap ass pedals very well ( Boss analog chorus and Marshall delay) Could not be happier with how it doesn't piss me off.

I really have not done the Hydra justice with all my ramblings. It truly is an amp that has to be heard. I will do some clips and vids in the future. Will be taking my time to do it to the best of my ability.

James was a pleasure to deal with during the build. Always responded to my emails and accepted my phone calls. He shipped it in record time. From Canada to Colorado was 3 days! Very pleased with that.

Overall this amp has put out the GAS flames. The only other amps I have gas for are a Peters Gryphon and Chimera. Highly recommend Peters amps!

I'm sure I have forgot something.........

God damn, i love that amp. I can vouch for Peters amps, man, these are amazing. I have a Gryphon and it has been my favorite amp ever. I`ve been playing it weekly for the past 1 1/2 years. I sold my Dragon,6534+,Cobra and was even thinking of letting my 5153 go too. But the blue channel on the 5153 is somewhat special, so it stays....For now.

Man, if decide to sell that thing, you have to let me know. I`m buying it.

Congrats man, you cherish that amp.

Chris

Congrats Tom! Looks awesome  . How does it compare to your other amps? Think they're gonna start collecting a little dust now?

Nice. I had the fourth one made and have missed it since selling it.

Thanks Tom! It really is on top as far as the other amps go. Idk man, I like having options depending on my mood. One day I like the Dragon......the next I like the UL.  I'm sure you can understand that having multiple amps yourself.

glad you like it! i'm liking mine quite a bit. i recently got my g major 2 hooked up to it and the clean channel is literally pure bliss. its amazing, couldnt ask for anything prettier sounding the way i have it set up =)

the gain is quite brutal but also shows your technique/crapiness(if you suck) well! couple of things that have disappointed me lately are having it cut in a band situation and that there is a slight loss of tone when using the effects loop.. i dunno if all effects loops are like this though i should really ask james about it. however to the amps defense i have only really used it in a band 2 times for an hour each so im not too used to dialing it in properly in that situation.

oh and the amp sounds like a BEAST when its cranked!

The loop itself shouldn't cause a degradation in the sound, but not getting optimal levels for the effects device (checking the settings and listening for what works best) will affect the sound. Also the quality of sound of the processor is important. I haven't used the G Major II, but I know the G Major. If they didn't significantly improve the device's i/o, that could have something to do with it. (I've been told by a few people the units are basically the same with some new effects added.) The G Major isn't horrible by any means, but I can hear a difference when it's used with any amp. But, check your level settings first, give them a try.

You had the eighth one. The serial number doesn't indicate how many of a particular model I've made, including past years.

ah okay thanks for clearing that up james!
and yeah its not a big loss of tone. lots of people i think would hardly be able to notice it.

peters and wizard are at the top of my lists for amps i want to try, they sound so good :D

Congrats

Ive been on the website checking out all the clips. I really like what I hear

Hey thanks man! Yeah, it is my favorite amp to date. I only see a chimera in my future which is totally unnecessary but would be cool. Man, I don't know how you can say it does not cut. This amp cuts better than anything, even better than my VHT. Maybe a setting thing or like you said before the Gmajor causing issues as well? IDK. Mine cut through like a freight train at full speed coming down a mountain pass  I also switched over to KT88's, that cleaned things up a bit and brought some more solid bottom end. Not huge, but enough. This Peters is walking over everything else in the band mix............................and I like it!
