If I recall correctly, UL's prior-to 2007 had EL34's. 2007 and beyond is when Steve began putting the KT88's in.
The one I had took either 6L6 or KT88 with a bias switch on the back. It was a 1994 and what I believe to be one of the first UL's?

The changes to my knowledge was going only KT88 and the preamp section PI 12at7. There is probably more but that is all I know about regarding the UL.

I have not tried a "newer" UL but I have heard them live and in clips. I much prefer the 100CL but that is just me. The Soldano Avenger seems to be able to get in the UL territory but man.......There are so many options these days.

I am sure anyone would be happy with any of these amps but the new Peter's really appeals to me and I want to hear it badly. It may be the fact that I love Exodus so much idk.

If I could buy whatever I wanted it would be between a 100CL, the new Peter's, KSR Ares or Orthos or a Henning.

I currently own an UL and a Peters triple fsm vega halo.

The Peters FSM can get plenty aggressive without any boosts, i dont use boosts too often. With 6550s and an MXR EQ, stand back, your balls are gonna rattle.

I absolutely love the Halo and Vega channels too, i wanted to get my FSM updated to the new design but that involved changes to the other two channels, i can't sacrifice them, i love them too much.

The mids are insane on the Peters, ine of my favorite features!!!!!! Very throaty and cuts great.

Will probably never sell this one, it is my staple.

Thanks for all the replies. Man I still don't know what to do. I go back and forth about it after every different persons replies. I think I'm going to eliminate the UL from the possibility. I really like it but from what I know about it, it would be perfect for my main project which is low tuned drony and chunky riffs but being so dry and stiff it probably isn't the best choice for speedier stuff like complex thrash and grindcore.
That leaves the new Peters or Randall 667.
Main band is like Tool and Neurosis riffs but with Fear Factory's guitar tone and industrial and synth elements. Guitar is a Les Paul Studio tuned to Drop Bb. Need tightness and clarity but a really thick growl and cut through the layers of synths. I use cleans a lot as well as heavy gain.
I also am into fast complex extreme metal styles as well.
Favorite guitar tone is Fear Factory Demanufacture, which I think is what Peters was shooting for with the new model.
Really liked the surgically precise and super tight gain of my old Engl Savage 120. That amp didn't have the growl and roar and low mid punch I was looking for.

Maybe buy a used 667 to see if you like it. You can always sell it and take a smaller hit to the wallet than buying something brand new that you might not like.

True, and I have other gear I need to buy. However, I'm in a position where I have money to buy get something that would normally be out of my price range and might not be in for a while. The other gear I need can wait.

Iv'e had a broken 667 at my house for the last 8 months. Local tech couldn't fix it. Randall won't give out to schematics. That means it has to go to an authorized randall repair facility. It's a really heavy doorstop at this point. Do yourself a favor and don't buy cheap chinese junk. I have heard of many other guys with these amps having problems. Not to mention the tone is really meh in my opinion. It doesn't stand out at all. Just bland to me. This is of course my opinion.

Peters build quality is one of the best in the business. James makes an awesome amp with great tone. His customer service is also one of the best in the business. If you ever have a problem he will help you get it fixed locally and not leave you hanging.

Sucks big time man, give a shout to Mike?

And you are damn right about James customer service, very supportive of his product.

The amp is actually owned by a good friend of mine. It just been at my house in between techs. He said he contacted Mike and Mike said he doesn't have anything to do with randall anymore. Before this starts some shit storm I'm just telling you what my friend told me. Pretty shitty deal really. The bottom line is he has to take it to an authorized randal reepair facility.

.

Get the Peters

I do want to say though, a great amp for tight surgical riffing is the Twin Jet.

Also even though it is dry, I promise the VHT 100CL is a Monster.

I've never owned a Peters, but having the builder respond in person to inquiries about his products, and being reasonable and complimentary about the competition speaks volumes. Admittedly, I've never owned a Peters or had enough playing time on one to really give an informed opinion, but this is making me curious to try one. The options are great and they look like they're built tough too.

As far as VHT/Fryette, well I know their amps pretty well. The UL is an incredible, legendary amp and you cannot go wrong with one of those. As Mr. Peters affirmed, I would agree that the UL seems your *safe* bet since you already like it. Having heard many sound clips/videos, become familiar with the product offerings, and see that Mr. Peters supports his products well, I'd have to say that you would have nothing to lose from getting a Peters.

As for the Randall, well I have put a few hours in on the Thrasher and Satan. I like the Thrasher best, but the Satan is no slouch either. I think they're solid amps where build quality is concerned. It sounds to me like if you want a more budget-friendly route, the Randall Thrasher would be my suggestion. I don't know about the 667, but chances are it's as spectacular as the Thrasher and Satan. The Thrasher has a surprisingly great clean channel and a whole lot of tone in between. I think the Satan is a bit more versatile in that it seems to be able to coax more hard rock and classic metal tones, but I wouldn't put it past any number of Youtube players who could probably make the Thrasher sound great with any style of music.
