Anyone familiar with this amp? They show it on their site under discontinued and I can only find one or two shaky clips on youtube. Just wondering what it's like. I heard the newer Peters and they sound incredible.

I bought a Gryphon as my first Peters amp, and I'm glad I held out after talking with James. He discontinued them for a reason. They basically went through many revisions and overhauls to become the new lineup. The amps in the lineup now are the best of what the Warhawk hoped to be. You can probably get them used for a great price, as most people want the newer models. So, they are probably a great deal if you can't afford a newer one used or new. But going from what James told me, if you want the sound of the clips you've heard of the newer models, you might not be satisfied with the Warhawk. Especially if the clips you liked were of channels that are very different from what the Warhawk was supposed to sound like.
If you're not too far out west in PA, you're welcome to check out my amps. I have a 50w Gryphon/Halo, a 100w FSM/Halo, and a 100w Halo/Vega/GNL Triple Channel due any time now. GNL is like a Gryphon/FSM hybrid of sorts. I've owned a few others, including the Hydra and the Chimera as well. Just let me know.

Tell me more about that GNL. I`m about a week away from my triple, or two. Soon anyways. I was torn between the Hydra,FSM and that new one (GNL).
Might be selling my Gryphon if the FSM covers it`s ground. I`m waiting till i get it in my hands before making any decisions though, the Gryphon is one hell of an amp to beat. What`s your take on the FSM vs Gryphon tone?

Yo Chris. For your info...
I have something very close to the GNL channel in my Peters Dual. It started out as a Hydra (which I wasn't gelling with) and was then modded under JP's instruction to get closer to the Gryphon/FSM tonal ballpark.
Whilst it's an excellent amp in it's own right, I still miss my original Gryphon.
IMO my GNL (or FSM or whatever it is) can get close to the Gryphon's tone, but it's missing that magic that the Gryphon had.
The key differences are my GNL is a bit leaner and more aggressive. Doesn't quite have the same thick, throaty growl that the Gryphon had.
And it doesn't have the juicy low-end bloom of the Gryphon either (that's the best way I can describe it). The attack is much more pronounced on the GNL, much sharper.
The Gryphon did the lower gain, spongier tones more convincingly than the GNL does, and then I could hit the front end with a TS type boost to get it's attack to tighten up and become more percussive for harder edged metal tones. Those boosted Gryphon metal tones were righteous, and nothing I've tried since has been able to duplicate that tone. Mind you I'm still experimenting with my GNL and will have clips up soon to compare more directly (just awaiting delivery of my last few custom guitars).
Cheers

The Gryphon will not sound like the FSM, and vice versa. There's some crossover and all Peters amps have a certain vibe and familiar characteristics, but they do their thing differently. The Gryphon has more of a vintage character while still being focused enough for all heavy styles of metal. It has a nice warm growl. The FSM is sort of like a Gryphon with a boost. Some of the vintage character is lost, in favor of a bit more aggression and attack.
Some people like the more vintage aspect of the Gryphon and some find it not aggressive enough. It depends on the type of player you are. I can say that if you boost the Gryphon or you only really use it at higher gain and damping settings, the FSM is probably more for you. If you like what the Gryphon does with the gain and damping a little lower, the FSM won't do that as well.
The GNL is a variant of the FSM. It's meant to make the FSM a little more "Gryphon-like". I decided on the GNL because I'm getting a Halo/Vega/GNL Triple. The Vega can cover lots of what I like about the Gryphon in the less aggressive settings, plus MUCH more. Seriously, the Vega is amazing and a real head turner. So, I figured that I'd go with the FSM or GNL to squeeze the most versatility out of it. Keep in mind that I do currently have a 50w Gryphon and a 100w FSM. If I find that my Gryphon does things that the GNL or Vega just can't do, I still have it for those times.
Once I have the triple channel, I can make comparison clips of the Vega, Gryphon, GNL, and FSM. But you're in front of me in line.![]()

Whomever has owned both, speak up! What are your thoughts on both? Can you compare them to any other amps out there as a reference point?

Go for it man, it is one helluva an amp. I'm so happy with my Halo/Vega/ FSM. I finally went with the FSM, I was really pushing the Gryphon for max aggressiveness so now I'm in between and have room for more or less, I'm in the best of both worlds.
This is my favorite amp of all time.

It's a hard decision.
This is one of the best sounds I've heard: http://tonefinder.com/index.php?section=id&value=7649
Although it's a Gryphon that's been quad-tracked with two different cabs.
I love the bark and growl. And that there's no high-end fizz. But I'm wondering if it's pushing the upper limits of what the Gryphon can do? Sometimes I want something more saturated and with a little more upper mid snarl. James suggested either the GNL or Hydra. But I can't decide.
