...damn he got a fat thick tone.
His rack was pretty dark so no clue what was in it.
Anyone know his rig(other than its a Mesa MkV)...or see the show to comment?

Just watched it. Always thought his tone was too compressed, same here tonight. Plays great though !!!

He's such a cool and humble cat... but there was a blanket over his tone... even moreso than normal. I'd love to see him just play thru say a Jubilee or Friedman... just to 'hear'... I personally think it would sound killer.

I haven't seen the episode yet, but hasn't he been using a TriAxis / 2:90 lately?

He's been going back and forth between that and the Mesa V rigs... I wasn't paying too much attention to the episode.. he could of been playing a mark 25... or a V.. Wasn't the Tri rig tho. Im a rush fan but Id rather they interviewed John

I read either on here or another forum that it was his Triaxis rig.

It might of been... I honestly was watching out of corner of eye... thought I saw a head ... could of been just JP's bicep..  :D Either way, I didn't care for the tone....

Me either, and haven't for some time (save for the Mark Five: 25 playthrough video, which had some great tones in it). Too dark, compressed, and "soupy" (for lack of a better word). Lathering all those effects on top just made it that much worse.

My thoughts as well. Also, I'm not a fan of his new Majesty guitars....in the looks/tone dept. And, just about all he played were intros from songs on his old solo album. I really expected him to rip it up...rather disappointing. I still love his earlier 90’s work in DT and LTE. Not so much his stuff from the past thirteen years or so.

It was his Triaxis rig.

Skip to 0:20. You can see his rack pretty clearly.

Exact same rig as in this Mesa demo video.

Pretty cool of John to give that guitar away to that kid that stumped Trunk!

I believe it was more calculated than that. It's product promotion. At that particular time, there probably wasn't anything else in the "box of junk" than that hat....which was there of course to lead to the "guitar giveaway." It was all set up for whomever stumped the trunk.

I'm a big JP fan but that was ones of my least favorite guest guitarists. He simply played riffs from DT and Suspended Animation.

What That Metal Show needs is a Marshall amp for everyone to use who is a guest--just bring a guitar and plug in and show out

That's a terrible idea

He was smart to bring his own rig, thought it sounded pretty good, fits his style well!
