So... If I had to get 2 CDs that BEST exemplify John Petrucci's musicality, which 2 would they be?

I 'd say the Liquid Tension Experiment (2???) and from the DT stuff Images and Words. As for his personal album below average for me, actually his album kind of pushed me away.

Images and Words and LTE 1 or 2 (I prefer LTE 2 though) IMO. I would also throw Awake in there too!!

Images and Words.

Awake.

That is ALL you need. Plenty of tasteful (as well as technically brilliant) stuff on both records.

I&W and Awake for me too. Kevin Moore brought out something in Petrucci that he doesn't have on his own.

Just ordered "Images & Words" and "Awake".

Reason I ask is, I've heard a fair bit of JP in passing, but never owned any of his music/DT's music. I know what I did hear was prettty good. But I'm old school - I like the disc to listen to front to back - go on a sonic journey. The whole DL'ing 1 or 2 songs off iTunes doesn't appeal.

Anyway - thanks for this... Stoked to hear what this cat can do.

Mojo

Petrucci's one of my faves. Those two albums set up their careers.

For me it's Train of Thought and Metropolis 2: scenes from a memory. Ok, throw in Images and Words too. Mo, Train is their heaviest work by far and I think you'd dig it. The other albums mentioned are also amazing.

The LTE stuff bores me. I just don't see how it serves any purpose. Mike said that he originally wanted Dimebag to be the guitarist for that group. Would've been so much cooler IMO. With JP it's just Dream Theater light to me. I mean, the playing chops and all that are incredible, but they are way more incredible in the context of the good songwriting from the above Dream Theater albums.

Good choice, I'd also add "Scens from a Memory". Those three are the best DT albums I love and recommand oh and "The change of Seasons".
Later stuffs I like them, but not as much, way too much intricate/techinical playing while impressive not as musical to me

I'll add these to my order right now :D

Thanks!

They can be extremely cheesy(lyrics/vocal delivery) & have tons of mindless keyboard wankery, but I dig a few tunes.

Try Octavarium as well. A couple good tracks on there. The root of all evil & These walls

With those four albums you've ordered, it should be enough to get what Petrucci is all about. I&W for the solid early stuf, Awake and Scenes for the mid era, ToT for the heavier era. LTE will give you that weird/experimental kinda stuff, but the albums you already got should have a good enough dose of that to get what Petrucci is all about.
