I think the Images and Scenes albums are his best.
I'd have to agree with this.

Yep, me too. But if the OP wants to hear some of Petrucci's best lead work, he needs to check out both LTE 1 and LTE 2.

I'll probably be a dissenting voice here, but to me the latest one, a Dramatic Turn of Events, is right up there with Images & Words. I think for the past few albums prior, Portnoy was pushing the band to try to be heavier, which just isn't one of their strengths. DToE is more "Petrucci" than any since Scenes from a Memory, to me. Also, if you decide you want more, on Portnoy's Dream Theater bootlegs page, the cover of Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon is great, as is the LTE live concerts.

Well, I went in thinking 2 CDs would suffice, but as of this afternoon, 4 are being shipped. It's never a waste of money, and judging from the amount of respect this guy gets from you guys here, I doubt I'll be displeased. There's something in everything for everyone if you listen for it. I'm a guitar junkie, and this cat's notorious for being one of the best. So ya, I'm stoked to session 4 full-lengths in the near future. Im certain I'll find some inspiration in it too.

Also pre-ordered the new upcoming Deftones. I also like simpler stuff, and the Deftones rule.

Peace

For me, just about everything since 2001 has been a let down. I thought 6DOIT had it's moments and that there have been flashes of greatness here and there throughout albums since.....but, for me....the 90's represent the best of Petrucci and Dream Theater. Although, I am fully aware that many people dig their newer stuff. Their last album "A Dramatic Turn Of Events", for example, had some nice parts in places...but, I really don't enjoy listening to the songs. I really loved "Images & Words", "Awake", "A Change Of Seasons", "Scenes From A Memory", and even "Falling Into Infinity". But, from the 2000's on, they really started to lose me.

Totally agree. Latest release is great on many levels...

Just ordered "Images & Words" and "Awake".

Reason I ask is, I've heard a fair bit of JP in passing, but never owned any of his music/DT's music. I know what I did hear was prettty good. But I'm old school - I like the disc to listen to front to back - go on a sonic journey. The whole DL'ing 1 or 2 songs off iTunes doesn't appeal.

Anyway - thanks for this... Stoked to hear what this cat can do.

Assuming you like the material, since you like albums you may love Images and Words. It's put together very well.

I actually dig their latest album, A Dramatic Turn of Events.

Yep... Great album.

Been a fan since the second album. I have enjoyed every album, but he had a more melodic style on the early albums. I'd say his best work so far is on Images and Words and Awake.

That said, I think the new album is excellent.

Really dug A Change of Seasons and FII as well!

Yeah, great tune and love the live covers they did on it.

Are you looking something that shows off his skill or song writing abilities?

The LTE skill wise is insane. The new album "Dramatic Turn of Events" and "Scenes From a Memory" are my two fav albums of his though.

Great thread! I agree "Images and Words" and "Awake" are both awesome and you can't go wrong with either of them. I actually discovered Dream Theater by accident when I heard Fortune in Lies thinking I was listening to a new Rush tune because of Charlie Dominici's vocals.

I've been teaching "Damage Control" to one of my students the past couple of weeks...such a good tune - everything he plays is so musical and fluent...it just works.

Not to mention he has a KILLER signature guitar(s)...and I'm not usually a fan of sigs...

Once in a Livetime is worth a look as well. Petrucci's best melodic playing on a live album, and Sherinian absolutely rips it up on keys.

These are as good as any 2 for Petrucci. You may have a hard time getting past the drum sounds on I&W, but it's a great album. "Learning to Live" is one of my favorite songs ever.

Take the Time, Lines in the Sand, and Hollow Years on this release were great!

I think it depends on your age and when you discovered the band. I'm in my late 30's and have followed them since I&W's came out. I met them on that tour (I was one of about 100 people at a place that held 1200) and ended up hanging with them in their dressing room drinking beers. They gave me a vinyl of WDADU, because you couldn't buy it at that point (before the internet and imports).

With that said, I'm partial to the early stuff I&W-Change of Seasons. They started to lose me on Falling and by Scenes I really lost interest. They started writing their songs in the studio as they were recording, a trend which held until M.P. left the band and they wrote Dramatic. I think that it shows in their song writing, everything post Jordan sounds like a jumble of riffs and interludes, with little "songs" to them. They also tried to go a lot heavier, without really knowing how. Train is the worst DT record, as the riffs are laughably bad in their attempt to be heavy and while JP shows he is a shred master, gone are all of the melodies and little things that made his earlier solos great.

However, if you are under the age of 28 or so, you probably would like the later works, as they sound more modern in their sound as well as their riffs; even if heavy is more bro rock than something truly evil. To me, the only CD's worth owning are I&W, Awake, and Dramatic. The rest can be acquired as you go along, but those are the stand outs.
