For me it's on this album. Here's a good example of it on this track at 4:20. Damm, i just love that tone he gets on this. Yeah, why shouldn't i be knowing what amp he used. :D

Was he still using the Mark IIC+ then, or was that the "NUNYA" pre that Mesa built for him?

IIC+

My favorite Petrucci tones can be found on Explorer's Club (Age Of Impact), SFAM, and also some great tones on the LTE stuff. I also dig a lot of the tones on 6DOIT as you've posted above.

Here's an example from the Explorer's Club....fast foward to 5:18 for the main solos.

Track 5 on the first LTE Album.

Track 5 on SFAM and/or "the Spirit Carries On" solo.

There is some good tone on this page, in just these 2 clips.

So good

One of my very favorite tones of his on that album (rhythm tone as well). My personal choice would be the tone on the solo for "The Great Debate" though. Pretty much the same lead tone as yours, but I really like how it sounds with the more aggressive playing:

(9:57-10:39)

I love Petrucci's dedication to the guitar and love many of his tones and riffs but Dream Theater is just too damn self indulgent and their songwriting is pretty weak for the most part with corny lyrics and cheesy synth/piano solos and extended instrumental breaks in songs that just seem to be put in just because.
I like Erotomania and a few other tunes though.

For me, it doesn't get better than SFAM, LTE 2 and Six Degrees. Early stuff was too dry but the current is way too saturated and immersed in effects.

The lead tone is great on those vids.
The Mark IIC+ has a really nice singing lead tone, but I'm not big on the rhythm tone from it.

Wow really. Dream Theater's been around for 22 years and I've NEVER heard that before. Wow, I'll have to look into this matter further.

Exactly how I feel. I owned one for a few months and loved the lead tone but the rhythm lacked bite. I don't know how to explain it. I know some loved it for everything. It goes to show you how different some amps can be. Overall I liked the IV best.

That's what I hear, lacks that bite needed for rhythm playing. It gets too hidden in the mix. I guess a pedal could add that, or turn the presence up more.
Great lead tone though.

Good, but for me my favorite Petrucci lead tones are off Awake.

I love his tones in this rig demo:
IIc+ and Eventide=pure sex!

And his tones from his Mark IV/Lonestar/2290 rig are sick too:

BTW, did anyone else notice how nice he's become over the past couple of years? He used to have a major ego and it showed all the time in interviews. Now he's so laid back and willing to talk about his gear in depth. Finally growing up!

+1 on his LTE stuff, in particular the tune "State of Grace", some nice organic tone when he's phrasing in the open spaces...then again, maybe that's because there is not much else masking the good qualities of the tone there, but whatever, it sounds great!
