Petrucci's best lead tone.

I still like DT's older stuff. Their newer stuff just annoys me.

I dislike almost everything they've done since 6DOIT.

+1 on his LTE stuff, in particular the tune "State of Grace", some nice organic tone when he's phrasing in the open spaces...then again, maybe that's because there is not much else masking the good qualities of the tone there, but whatever, it sounds great!

The live version of State of Grace from An Evening With... is awesome. I like the pacing better live and his tone is killer.

The lead tone is great on those vids.
The Mark IIC+ has a really nice singing lead tone, but I'm not big on the rhythm tone from it.

Exactly how I feel. I owned one for a few months and loved the lead tone but the rhythm lacked bite. I don't know how to explain it. I know some loved it for everything. It goes to show you how different some amps can be. Overall I liked the IV best.

The two C+s I've played had ridiculous bite. Don't think James Hetfield would've used them if they lacked bite.

I think the Ibanez era tones are way better than the muddy tones he gets nowadays.

I don't believe the switch from Ibanez to EBMM has much to do with the differences in tone as some may think. JP made a conscious effort to modify his tone at the point of 6DOIT. Also, changing his string gauge from 9's to 10's. (although, he's be known to go back to 9's at times for certain applications) At this point, he was going for a more thicker, heavier, aggressive type tone than what he had in the 90's. Also, during this time, he began using lower tunings more often.(Train of Thought for example) But, if you are simply talking about the era (the 90's) in which he just happend to be using his Ibanezs.....than yeah, I for the most part like most of those tones better than his later tones....with the exception of tones that can be found on 6DOIT. But, much of the differences in tone have little to do with his switch from Ibanez to EBMM as many may think.

My top 3 would be:

1.Image & Words
2.A Change Of Seasons (long odd solo is probably my favorite Petrucci solo)
3.Suspended Animation (when he didn't use the road king, I don't like the distortion sounds he does with the RK)

For rhythm my top 3 would be:

1.Awake
2.Scenes From A Memory
3.Image & Words

I think petrucci's best lead tones are on images and words. This album contains my favorite tones ever recorded, in fact.

Not one of my favorite albums by DT, but I like his solo tone on A Shattered Fortress.

That's a Mark IV head, 2x12 recto cab, a boss delay and I think he said the boss NS-2.

+1. The old Triaxis/2:90 rig he used to use a long time ago sounded killer. Not sure if he used that on that album but I saw him a couple times with that rig in he early 90's and it was awesome. That being said, I can't get a tone I like out of a Triaxis no matter what I try.

Exactly what i meant.I surely dn't think it was the guitar that made the difference, but since his left Ibanez and joined EBMM his tone took the downhill.

Images and Words for me. They sorta lost me after that.....

I love the tone on Under A Glass Moon. Great solo too.

I really like the tone on Awake too, but I think he went a little overboard with the wah. I completely blame that on the rest of the band though...it was their job to hide it from him.

I love his tones in this rig demo:
IIc+ and Eventide=pure sex!

And his tones from his Mark IV/Lonestar/2290 rig are sick too:

BTW, did anyone else notice how nice he's become over the past couple of years? He used to have a major ego and it showed all the time in interviews. Now he's so laid back and willing to talk about his gear in depth. Finally growing up!

I can't recall any interviews that showed this huge ego you mention. He's always seemed the same dull and dry guy in any I've seen. Not saying you're wrong but care to share some examples?

Petrucci has always been a super nice guy. Talked to him for a bit on the Metropolis tour, he was super humble.
