Can anyone who's played several Friedman's comment/compare/contrast your experience with the Phil X? I have the PT and I'm looking to add another Friedman to complement it but give me something different at the same time. I love to play rock/hard rock and bleed into riff oriented metal from time to time but also clean up for blues type of overdrive. I think this may just be the Phil X?

Maybe Dave if you'd comment on overall gain amount vs. the BE100, SS, JJ, SB?

Any Phil X amp comments very much welcome. Thanks!!!

i havent been able to play the PT but have had phil x for a few weeks.

pretty different type of friedman to my ears than my others (JJ, SS, BE) - its open, grindy and rawish compared to the others. has some of that friedman feel DNA to it and although still has some polish compared to other makes it has a lot less than the other friedmans.

it can get positively bright, brash and cutting if you want.

the gain is the lowest to me (and has different character, not as thick and saturated and is more like a grind to me). it also can be a very spanky and chimey amp.

its cool - but it has a sort of stripped down vibe to me (in tone and features), which is a bit different.

Awesome answer and extremely helpful!!!!! Thanks for the detailed answer.

np, let me know if youd like any more thoughts

Journey: Would you say the Phil X is closer to the JCM 800 camp than most Friedmans?

definitely, particularly when engaging the cut switch some...it still has some of dave's trademark feel but its much closer to the immediacy of an 800 compared to other friedmans i have tried.

its actually sort of a more bare bones sound and feel but it still really makes you want to play for some reason :) the voicing is still really nice and, for me, i sometimes wish some of the friedmans were a little more crisp and raw - this gives you that.

Would you say that the Double J has some of that crispness and top in the voicing vs. the BE. In other words....how different are the BE channels of the JJ vs. the BE?

I guess it's a moot point for me now as I have the JJ on the way so soon enough I'll know for myself :)

to me, the JJ was more articulate with a lot of not separation..so could definitely get a bright, toppy sound.

the difference to the X, for me, was that although the voicin of the JJ is more crisp than the BE the feel and polish is still there vs the X that had a more raw feel and tone.

the BE and JJ (on BE) can sound pretty similar - with different settings but the JJ always has a little more zip to it (ie the nature of the gain is different between the two).

i think youll love it, though its hard to imagine not liking either one! im hving a hard time deciding which ones to let go, myself
