Pick sizes, brands ?

If I can remember the make, I will chime back in, but I got a few 3 packs of these heavy gauge picks that have a hand honed edge to them, and they are amazing. A little pricey but the edge is hand feathered down to a sharp edge. Really nice.

Are you talking about Dunlop Primetone picks ? They have hand beveled edge . I'm ordering some small triangle shaped ones .

I know it makes me seem silly, but after playing a bunch just think the heavy celluloid pics sound better. The Jazz III definitely plays fast.

I really like the green .88mm Tortex Jazz III XL picks. I could never bond with plain tortex because they arent sharp enough but the sharp tortex are too sharp. The Jazz III had the sharpness I wanted but were too thick and small. The Tortex Jazz III XL is perfect if you want the Jazz sharpness but in bigger size with more options on thickness. Havent seen them in any stores though so I ordered the bulk bag on amazon.

You could also try the Dunlop Tortex III which is a standard sized pick but the the Jazz 3 Tip.


I used to use the .60mm Orange Tortex Standards but recently switched to .73mm Yellow Tortex cause they are faster off the string and offer a little flex when strumming chords.

try a Dunlop Jazztone 208 Thick and pretty non slip used to use stubby or jazz and switched to these and never looked back.

Gravity Classic XL 1.5mm picks. Those work better for me than anything else I've ever tried.

Dunlop Primetone Triangle picks with the grip surface in 1.5mm. Very percussive and articulate.

Picks make a noticeable difference in sound that actually translates through the whole chain, surprisingly. I've used Jazz IIIs and Dava Jazz for years but recently started playing around with the "regular" size picks again. I definitely lose some control and accuracy with the standard size picks but the tone is noticeably better and the upper strings ring out more brightly and "VH-ish" on chords, haha. The IIIs are a bit dull sounding in comparison.

I have a couple thick Gravity picks in Jazz III size that make fast runs a breeze but they sound "plinky" like plastic on the strings. Been getting great tones with these lately:

What is it you guys like about sharp picks? I can never get along with them.

Speed, less surface area on the strings and control. I used to use gator grip 2mm BHT found it too thuddy and tried a jazz III one day and noticed it was so much easier to control. Some here where saying you loose the attack or brightness but I haven't found that myself and I assume picking technique has a bit to do with that as well

Totally agree, this is one of the reasons I still use the plain ole red Jazz IIIs. Every time I try others it doesn't sound right. I also have a bum right index finger and hold the pick between my thumb and middle finger and the small size is almost a necessity.

I use a contoured Acetate Dugain that cost $15 for Django style playing. It's contoured on one side for thumb and differently on the other for your index finger (or middle in my case). Super thick, not really an electric guitar pick. But still can't believe I paid $15 for one pick.

I actually have those as well but the tortex iii isnt as sharp as the tortex jazz iii xl.

I used the Tortex 1.14mm (purple) for years and then discovered the Jazz III's in the same gauge and material. From there I went to the same Jazz III but in Ultex which is now my favourite pick material ever. Recently a friend gave me a bunch of the Hetfield Blackfangs which are basically an Ultex Sharp in 1.14mm and I love them. Ordered a bunch more of them and the regular Ultex Sharp 1.14mm. Great for those fast pick phrases etc.

I picked up a bunch of gravity picks years ago and couldn't stand the weird chirping plastic sounds. I had high hopes for those too. I think they're still in a box somewhere.

I kept trying out other picks and I always wound up back at the Jazz III until I tried the black ice picks. Those are my personal favorite now. I also like the Clayton rounded jazz III type picks.

I started off on the .88 green tortex FWIW.

The first pick I settled on and grew attached to were the standard shape Dunlop Tortex greens and I stayed with those for a while. They were great for playing rhythm, sounded good and stayed in my hand but when I started really working on fast single note runs I found it to be a bit too floppy. I moved up to the purples and the back down to the blue ones and stayed there for a few years. I stopped playing for about ten years and when I got back to it I stumbled across the Dunlop Ultex picks. Those were great, I was using the 1.14mm up until the start of this summer. I started experimenting with different picks and found that the Dunlop Primetone picks are made of the same stuff as the Ultex but they come in thicker sizes. I'm really happy with the Standard Shape w/Grip 1.5 mm. Stays in your grip even when you sweat, really stiff but smooth so it releases the string without too much drag and its bright without being clicky.
