Just got a new pickup in the mail today. Gonna record a quick clip (distorted) of maybe 3 different pickups. How do you guys want to hear it? Single track only? Double track it? Drum track behind it or just guitar? Will just be like 20 seconds each. No post processing or eq. One mic (SM57 on a V30) into a Presonus Firebox into Garageband. Gonna do this within the next few hours(gotta eat some tacos and go to the gym first. In that order.  ) so it should be up by tonight.

Edit.

Here is the link. Three takes one after the other. Three different pickups. Amp/mic was not touched. One track (one take each, so it's a bit sloppy). Which one you like?

More versions down lower

Will post pickups tomorrow.

i'd say single track - guitar only, easier to pick out the differences

what you get?

I'll record the clips and then spill the beans.

I like the first one and the second one. The third one is similar to the first, but too fizzy/fuzzy to my ear. One is big and beefy but a little loose and undefined when you are doing the quick little riff on the lower strings. Still though, a cool tone. The second one is more compressed sounding but has nice definition in the lows but sounds more distant or quiter overall. It also sounds luike the distortion is the smoothest.

I think if you double tracked that with pickup one and pickup two panned left and right it would sound freaking monster! What riff is that by the way?

Second one was my favorite but the first one was good too. Didn't care too much for the third one. A bit too fizzy/harsh.

Nice reply. Ya know, in the room they all sound really good. Each is a little different but I'd wouldn't be sad if I was stuck with any one of them. The riff is part of a one of my songs that is not finished. I'll post details about the guitar and pickups after a few more posts. BTW, a guy on Tonefinder.com (where I posted the clip) commented that he liked #1 best, followed by #3 and then #2.

1st clip is a SD JB in my Squier Supersonic(basswood body,11-70 strings, wired without tone knob)
Clip 2 is a Jay Turser JT-220GT Les Pual copy($199 brand new) with the stock pickup and 10-52 strings.
Last is the Super Sonic with my new BKP Painkiller.

In the room they all sound very good. A little different but not night and day to my ears. PK is the tightest and a little brighter. JB sounds a little fuller and the cheapo is a little smoother. Honestly, I'd be happy with any one of them.

Man, it pains me to say that I like #2 the best. Ouch.

  Yeah, that's kind of why I threw that one in there. I did have to pot that pickup. It squealed a bit when I bought it. After potting it myself it was fine. I don't know what it is supposed to be modeled after, but it sounds really good in person. They all do.

I liked clip 1 the best. 2 sounds mushy on the bottom. 3 sounds good until you got to the riff. The low end sounds like it's hitting a wall. Like a limiter, or it's compressing real bad. Could be the pickup is fine and is just producing lower frequency's then the speaker can handle...

I'd keep that JB. you got a good one!!!

love the low mid of the jb clip

the turser has a nice upper mid growl

the BKP is squeakey sounding......

have to wonder what the 3 of them tracked together would sound like....probably really fuckin nice.

i like that riff too!

Well, lets find out. Give me a couple of minutes.....

All three. Painkiller Right, JB left and Jay Turser center. Wasn't trying to be tight when I recorded it. Amp gain was on 3, bass, mid, treb, and depth were at noon, pres. on 2. Volume was loud enough to play with a drummer.

and here is with drums and bass(my guitar using a bass amp sim)

.

yeah brother!!!! thats a lotta thump, character, and definition right there.

proves you don't need 20k worth of guitars to conceive and record a thumpin ass ball crusher guitar track.

you can actually hear each track breathing separately, but all 3 work in great complement to each other.

#2 sounds best to me also...hey..i love it when cheap stuff sounds great !

Totally agree about the cheap stuff sounding good. There is a bunch of expensive (to me) stuff that sounds killer. Good thing for me there is a good amount of inexpensive stuff that sounds pretty damn rockin too.
