Pickup Question

Hotter paf works for me, never liked anything too hot.
To add some girth, warmth and gain to my SG, the MCP Detroiter was it.
WCR Godwood for my Explorer.
I would love to try either of these in my Strat or Charvel and see how they work for alder longer scale guitars.
I’ve heard great things about Suhr pups for these type guitars, and always wanted to try a Dimarzio SD ala Iron Maiden and all those other hard rocking 80s bands.

I do really like the Fluence Classics that came in the Satchel Charvel.

I probably won’t go the BKP or WCR route at the moment. Thinking Tone Zone, Suhr Aldrich, Suhr DSH+, maybe a Dimarzio SD. Any opinions on these? Appreciate the suggestions. Keep em coming.

Check out psychodave’s clips, all recorded with an Alder Charvel with an Aldrich. Great pickup. I swapped a DiMarzio SD out of my Alder Chubtone and put an Aldrich in it, sounds way better now (and it wasn’t bad with the DSD). I also love the Duncan Distortion, not boutique, but a great, big bottom end. Very thick.

Sorry......what was the question??

Tone Zone is fat and juicy but bass are too much artifical and top end is still somewhat muffled. Sounds good alone bud sounds thin in band mix with Charvel I had . Ibanez put them in J Customs and in my case it totally killed sound of that guitar (honduran mahagony/maple top). Replaced it with Rebel Yell a it was easily on Suhr/Anderson level soundwise (where it belongs btw).
Aldrich may sit well but I think it will be too much high end, they works much better in LP style guitar.
Andersons are really special, big bottom, mids mids mids, present but not sharp or piercing top end.
X2N - one trick pony for fatten up floyded superstrat, full throttle pickup :)
Agree with Duncan SH-6 Distortion, when they fit in right guitar, they are fantastic metal pcikups.

The X2N is the worst pickup I have ever played. I installed it on and off of like four guitars until I decided it was udder trash.

I like the TZ and crunch lab a lot in my ibanez prestige guitars.
What did you not like about the X2N? I've been curious about trying one. Any chance you could compare it to the Duncan Distortion, Black Winter, or Dimebucker?

I've always been under the impression the X2N is more bright and cutting rather than fat, but then again, I have no first-hand experience with one.

No dynamics, too hot, a lot of string pull so you have to keep them really low, inarticulate. It was best in a superstrat, worst in a LP. Dimebuckers have a razor sharp high that I don't generally prefer, but it had some definition. A duncan distinction is better for me than the above two, I like the one I had in a Jackson that I had. Well balanced overall and nice and punchy.

If you have any interest in a Dimebucker, get a bill and Becky LX500XL cheaper and is overall yummy.

The crunch lab is probably my current favorite dimarzio bridge bucker. Aggressive and musical IMO.

I ran a set of BKP Aftermath in an alder T style for a while, really thick ballsy tones, hit the amp nicely but not overkill.

Gotcha, thanks.

I already have a Dimebucker in one of my guitars that I'm not really enjoying. I asked about the Distortion and the Dimebucker because that's what I have experience with to use as a point of comparison.

Yeah, the Crunch Lab is a good pickup to warm up a bright-sounding guitar while still retaining some agression and tightness, I agree.

I have been really digging the bkp brute force pups lately. Thicker than the painkiller, but still tight. Not alot of info on them, and i need to put a meter to them, but everything i like about sh-5’s and sh-6’s, but with that bkp hi-pass/lo-pass thing goin on. I have one in a les paul, tuned to dropping b right now, and its just crushing.

What’s a good humbucker to fatten/thicken up an axe with an alder body, maple neck and stainless frets? Something hot. No Afwayu. Great pup, but I already have two and wanna try something different.

I'm essentially doing the same thing ecept with 2 of my Les Pauls. I have An Aldrich set for one & then i plan on buying the following to experiment. SD-SH5, SD-SH14, SD-SH6, SD-SH4, SD-SH11....The only BKP I'm interested in is the Alnico Nailbomb or the Alnico Warpig. I Will also buy some MCP's as well.

Hey I need to follow this one. I have Nazgul in my Solar S1.6 and I like them but I think I want to try something different. There is a lot of interesting suggestions here. I was contemplating SD Black Winters but BKP as got me curious.

These used to get a lot of love around here for being good for fattening up an axe, but I haven't seen them mentioned in a while. Never played them myself so I can't give you a yay or nay, just passing on historical lurking knowledge :) Personally I love the Anderson pickups, my main axe has H1- and H2+ in it and totally happy with 'em! Cheers

I’ve done a ton of research in the past 2 days and the TZ is definitely the one that comes up the most for fattening up an Alder/Maple axe. Had an Anderson H3 before in a Gibson Explorer and it killed. Definitely gonna revisit that one someday.

I LOVE MCP’s. I’ve have/had the Afwayu, Angel Dust And Detroiter And they’re all awesome.

I love the Black Winter, but it's definitely not a fat-sounding pickup. It's not as thin as an EMG 81 or a Dimebucker can be, but it leans more towards tight, focused, and cutting.

So I threw a Tone Zone in, and it’s ok. Sounds good but a little too fat and pillowy in the low end. Thinking about trying out a Warpig or Afwayu. How do they compare? I’m very familiar with the Afwayu. Some say the Warpig is “too much.” What say you?

I had both a Warpig set and Afwayu set in a Jackson SL2H (alder body) and found them to also be very fat and pillowy in the low end

Best pickup I've found for fattening whilst still retaining a nice chirp in the attack is the Jim Wagner Iron Man. But you already know about that one.
BTW what tuning will you be using for this guitar?
