So I threw a Tone Zone in, and it’s ok. Sounds good but a little too fat and pillowy in the low end. Thinking about trying out a Warpig or Afwayu. How do they compare? I’m very familiar with the Afwayu. Some say the Warpig is “too much.” What say you?
So, I have like 5 Tone Zones here...just can't stand them. Every time I've grabbed a Charvel SoCal I swap out the TZ. Hence the collection of TZs..If you like the Afwayu I'd just stick with that, it's a great one. I need another.

Best pickup I've found for fattening whilst still retaining a nice chirp in the attack is the Jim Wagner Iron Man. But you already know about that one.
BTW what tuning will you be using for this guitar?
I LOVE the Ironman! Killer pickup! Tuning in D# mostly.

Yes it is. I’m always looking for another.

Some people mention BKP Holy Diver. I had them in my Jackson SL2H, very nice and thick almost perfect. But kinda loose in the low-end.

Go for a C Pig. It's on par with Iron Man and not too much.

Call Wade and ask him about the HotHeads!
Be nice if he updated his site now and then!

Trust me.... I owned Hot Head pickups. I hated them with a passion. They are very dark sounding.

Don't know what guitar you tried them in, but I have them in both a Lifeson Axcess and an R0, and I would call them anything but dark. Big but tight bottom with mucho string separation, and although they have some chewiness to them, they sound very open for high output pickups to me. Love em! Thinking about another set for the Chubtone I have.

I have one guitar that has had a Tone Zone in it for 20 years. It's an old Charvel parts'o'caster that has a homemade Floyd installation and rear route for pull-ups. It's a bit thin and I found the TZ works in that guitar decently. Even in that guitar, I've been debating something a little different lately. I'm mostly held up because I'll feel an irrational need to match new middle/neck singles with the new humbucker, and that's more effort than I feel like putting into it! :)

I tend to use trusty old Dimarzio Super Distortions or Seymour Duncan Customs in most guitars. However, I have 3 or 4 with Anderson H-3's or H-3+'s, which I've always like to be high output pickups that are a bit warmer and yet have clarity.

I just put an Aldridge set in a LP and really dig them so far. Huge, thick and pissed off. Great neck pickup too.

I just put a Tone Zone in a McNaught Street Lethal (alder/maple) that’s really bright and snappy to thicken it up, but I’m not diggin the pillowy low end it’s got. Thinking of trying an Afwayu or Warpig in that guitar.

I had a zebra Hothead set that I installed in a variety of guitars and they always sounded great. The Hothead bridge remains one of my fave bridge pickups to date. I sold that set because I had no guitars that suited the zebra cosmetic. But I finally got around to acquiring another Hothead bridge for my Ibanez RG Prestige. I found the Hothead bridge to be exactly as Randy describes it.

Ha ha funny you mention the zebras....both Hothead sets I have are zebra/reverse zebra! You have some good clips of them! I got sold on them I think six or seven years ago from some Mark Day videos when he was using them. Of course he also sold me on Aldrich pickups as well! ;)

I tried them in 3-4 different Charvels along with a Luxxtone. A friend and I were surprised how dark and dull they were. No big deal, just my opinion based on owning them and giving them a fair chance.

Great to have choices, huh?
