My Flying V has Duncan Distortions, and with my JVM, they sound mushy, and lack clarity. I hate to say it, but I shoulda kept the stock 496R/500T.. I need a tighter bottom end, and more clarity.. suggestions?

Try some Motor City Detroiters or perhaps a Duncan Custom 5.

I gots to back up Greg on the MCP Detroiter. I have a Hamer V that I tried a Duncan Distortion in at one point, and the results were just as you described (just the wrong pickup for the guitar), but with the Detroiter it sounds monstrous. It's not clinically tight, but it's tight enough with a great feel and clarity. The MCP Nasty Nasty would also be another good option, as the eq curve is very similar to the Detroiter, but it's even tighter.

Depends on what you want. The Detroiter is cool if you want hottish PAF with an aggressive edge. However, I would recommend going back to the 500T or a Dimarzio Super Distortion. After trying a ton of boutique pups, nothing has replaced the Super Distortion as my favorite bridge pup. I have yet to find a wood that it doesn't sound great in.

I had a B.C. Rich Gunslinger that was alder, and came with the Super Distortion. Sounded like ass with my 5150. Flabbier than the Duncan. I think I'll go back to the 496R/500T's.

I have a Gibson V and am thinking of putting a couple lace alumitones in there.

I put a set of Aldrich in mine and it sounds great.

I was gonna say that you can't get much better then the stock ceramics for hard rock or heavy stuff with passive pickups. I like these pickups best in v's and explorers.

High output pup + very high gain amp usually = mushy tone. All depends on how much clarity you are looking for. I took the 500T out of mine as they are too high of an output and not enough clarity pup for my needs IMO. Good luck.

agreed, thats why i want to try the alumitones :D non deathbuckers

I'll be putting a '57 Classic and Classic+ in my V later in the week. I tend to run my amps really gainy, so I've had good luck with more vintage-voiced pickups. My other guitars have '57 Classics, P90's, and Burstbuckers and they all do well with dirty amps.

Is the 500T not somewhat similar to the Duncan Distortion? I swear I just read that the other day, but I've never compared them.

I love my Dimarzio AT-1. Very balanced eq. Awesome for mid-high gain. Mine is in an American Deluxe Strat. Love it!

I've been hunting pickups for my V as well.
Stock, blah.
Tried El Diablo, wasn't right for me.
also tried Aldrich, not tight enough on bottom, but hot enough. Interestly enough, put one in my Goldtop Les Paul and the Aldrich seems perfect in that guitar. Strange voodoo.
have a BKP Holy Diver in there now, and somethings not right, not enough output. sounds great, if I liked a weaker pickup, plenty tight, just feels too vintage for me.
Going to try a Dimebucker next, then if that doesn't work, just say screw it and order another Warpig.
They work wonders in my Les Paul Customs, so worth a try.
Also don't forget you need F-Spaced.

I agree with the Super D

in my v i have humbucker from hell in neck and super distortion in bridge. Very versatile combo no matter what the gain settings.

BKP Rebel Yell or Cold Sweat, MCP Angel Dust or Garuda, or the Aldrich!!!

Yep, I didn't like the 500T, Duncan distortion or JB. Put the Aldrich in and bam! It's interesting because I had an explorer with the 500T and loved it.
