A couple of question:

1. With the 250 pot for the JB do you need to have a 250 in both tone and volume? Also can you still have 500s for the neck pup?
2. How does the Custom and Custom5 compare to the JB tone, output and feel wise? I had a Custom5 in another guitar for years and always liked it and had a Custom for the matter in another guitar.

1. Nope it's just the volume pot and if you have a seperate pot for the neck pickup then yes you can. If you have a traditional les paul it would have two seperate volume pots so it would work fine that way. On my PRS custom 22 I did it with I had just one volume pot and with the 250k volume pot it even made the neck pickup sound really nice too. Made it a little milder and more vintage which was great for clean and leads.

2. No clue :)

Duncan custom/59 hybrid with an A2 or A5 magnet. Killer, killer pup!

They make the A5 version as a stock pickup, the Custom 5. Cool pickup if you like subdued mids.
I like old JBs but I've tried several newer ones and have hated them all...very harsh and ratty sounding in my experience.

love those pickups; I made one kinda like that; I replaced the slug coil on my rebel yell with one from a Vanzandt Trubucker. I was going to put it back the way it was, but it sounds so darn good, I'm leaving it alone. That thing smoked into my Voodoo modded 6505+. I think Duncan does something like the custom/59 hybrid from their custom shop. Hey James, did Dave ever build you that "Hell Yeah" Purple Plexi? If so, you gotta, gotta, gotta try a DSD or an old Mightymite Distortion in your strat through one. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face from ear to ear.

Not the same pup! The Custom 5 is just a standard Custom with an A5 magnet. I'm talking about a 59/Custom hybrid:

i've found the custom to be too fat on the low end and the custom custom to just be overall lifeless...just my two cents..

hard to beat a duncan distortion if you want stop on a dime palm muting type stuff...if you're looking at duncan anyway

In my case the jb works best in brighter sounding guitars like a jackson. For a les paul I would look for something a little brighter to contrast the darkness of mahogany

I've never tried it, but I think a Dimarzio Super Distortion would sound pretty good in a Les Paul.
