Pickup Wiring Volume Differences.

So, in most of my guitars, which are HH configuration, I like having the middle selection split (think Petrucci) so I get the jangly tone that’s less abrasive and more bell like than the front and rear positions, but it seems to get a bit buried when the dynamics of the band comes up. Other than just turning my amp up (which makes the full hum bucking modes just that much louder), I’m curious as to if there’s a way to get that similar tone w/o the volume drop.

Is it just the nature of the output in that position? Am I doomed to just deal with this? Anyone here find a workaround for this?

I think most people use that position for cleans. In that case, a compressor is your best friend. I have that position on a Suhr and with distortion, it's totally fine as is. But then again, I always use a compressor on cleans and lightly broken up tones, and rarely play clean with humbuckers.

Another thing you can try is running your middle position out of phase, instead of split. I find that they thin out nicely for cleans this way, without the volume drop.

Have the two pickups run in parallel instead of series, less volume drop, still humbucking, thinner tone. Pretty good cleans too.

This
Wire the guitar so that each pickup switches to parallel coil wiring in the middle pos.
Still humbucking, but sounds like split coils with no noise.
I like the neck pickup wired in parallel by itself as well.

Three way switch. Two Seymour Duncan Triple Shot pickup rings. Push / pull out of phase pot. Gives you 40 pickup combinations. That is what I use on my LP.

Look at the way ibanez does their 5 way on HH prestiges. I don't remember exactly what it is, but it is brilliant.

It's exactly the same wiring (2 inside coils in parallell) that he's having problems with.
