But he doesn't realize he fucked around and found out, LOL

He goes through all the trouble (and a half dozen failed attempts at winding) of "making a pickup"

And then, super proud of his result, he plays a song for us with his totally amazing homemade neck pickup, with a homemade LPB1 circuit in there, for gain or whatever

As you can tell, his tone is absolutely horrific - funnily enough, it just sounded like any other single coil when clean, but as soon as the gain is added it becomes obvious why pickups are so expensive. It's the details, brah.

Honestly, I don't know if Joshua here knows that his video is the best advertisement for 300$ pickups I've ever seen.

Any DIYer knows you end up spending more money on a project than if you just bought something off the shelf. Then unless you already have skills and know what you're doing there's a higher potential your DIY comes out janky as hell. In this case a magnet taped to cardboard.

I'll give this dude the benefit of the doubt. His workbench suggests he's probably wound some actual pickups. This may have just been a proof of concept experiment. One of those how cheap can I make this and it still "works" videos. Unfortunately he made no mentions this was the video's purpose. So now you're going to have a certain type of forum twit watch this then run around saying "pickups only cost $4 to make; any pickup that costs more than $12 is a ripoff. IMO/IME"

The really telling part, to me, is the sound of his pickup - yes, could you theoretically make a guitar pickup for four dollars?

Sure, just like you could theoretically build a house out of a Frigidaire cardboard box you found by the dumpster of the home depot.

The whole point to me, is that his pickup, while still technically picking up the sound of the guitar strings, sounds like complete and utter shit. It might be the worst actual tone I've ever heard from a neck pickup.

It's in tune, and it's technically passing a signal to his amp or whatever, but it sounds like the worst guitar tone in human history. No matter how he dresses it up with his "LoL I'm just like, so quirky and sO RaNdOm" music video, his ridiculously loud drum machine and bassline, you can't hide how achingly shitty that sound is.

Which ironically proves just how much work goes into crafting pickups that sound phenomenal.

That's the thing about these types of videos. They're a fun watch just to see what happens. Without a proper preface though you're going to get 2 camps that have complete opposite take aways. This is especially true when the setup is like this video; pickups are expensive let's see what we can make for $5. Then completely leave off anything about R&D or it works, but sounds like ass.

Camp 1 will be you, me, and people with decent intelligence. We watch this and come away with the thought of yeah it's cheap and technically functions, but it's not useful in any reasonable capacity. We see it a a justification for why some pickups can be expensive. You can't just wrap wire around a random magnet and make something spectacular. We understand that part of the cost includes quality components and a metric ton of R&D to produce something that works AND sounds good. You put it best as this video being a good ad for why some pickups cost $300.

Camp 2 is your typical forum twink who parrots shit with zero real world knowledge & experience. They'll watch this video and walk away with it can't be that hard to wrap wire around a magnet and it only costs 5 bucks. See, this guy did it. These pickup manufacturers are ripping us off. They're just too fucking retarded to understand how much effort goes into producing something like this. Then they'll use this video as justification for their dumbass, uneducated opinion. Sure buddy. It's cheap and functions but you left off the part where it sounds like garbage and is virtually unuseable.

Maybe a few members here have made their own pickups...
