Hello RT,
Installed a set of Planet Tone H-Bombs into a friends Gretsch and was pleasantly surprised. Why? I am not normally into pickups that have that certain TV Jones/Filter-Tron thing going on.
I find them to have a weird frequency focus and to be thin.
These pickups? Whoa. Vintage-y for sure, but they have this cool thing going on.
Super clear. A lot of clarity but it's warm.
Warm and pleasant, but very clear. The pickups are very dynamic. I figured this hollow-body Gretsch would be pretty woofy, and heavily overdriven tones would be unusable for the most part, on the neck especially.
NOT THESE!
The neck has one of the most fun lead tones I have ever heard and played in this ilk. The pickup really, really sings and sustains as if I almost have a pedal or something on. The neck maintains clarity with loads of gain added. Normally pickups that do this are harsh or unpleasant or thin when clean, but these aren't like that at all.
The bridge is also a joy to play. Goes into some attitude and twang and also eats up any gain thrown at it with retained clarity. The bridge is also fun to play on a crispy clean amp without being harsh on the ears.
Overall, I did not expect that I would like tehse for what I do, but I found myself smiling and shaking my head at the neck tones 100%.
Had a lot of fun with this set.
If you are looking for something kinda vintage and different, you may want to check these out.
My buddy got them 20% off. They are always having sales.
Will upload pics of the pickups and the Gretsch soon
*Note that these are the same size as a standard pickup and not the rounded edge Tron style.
