PLAY LIKE OR SOUND LIKE?

Hi, i've been wondering a lot about this and just want to know what do you guys think.
When people are searching for tone, is it beacause they really want to sound just like what they are hearing?
or is it the song or solo that is so cool or well done that it makes you feel that that's the sound?
i hope it's not to complicated to think.. lol.. just want to check what do you think!!

I dunno. I guess I have been inspired by both. If you really get down to it, ones level of talent and ability to finesse notes contributes to the end sound. That being said, I've spent more time finding a tone then copying a certain players style.

For me, it's about getting the optimal feel that I can get from my playing style. If the tone is not right... it just doesn't sound right to me and that really affects how I play. It's like paint on a canvas. It's the colors, the stroke, the subject.
