Man. I hate to say it, but either GC doesn't spend ANY time with their used guitars, or I just got unlucky with just about every used LP I tried...but if I had unlimited funds I would have bought ONE of the eight I tried. The rest played like...crap. And I can't blame it on the year...wide range from '87 up to '15. The only one I liked was a 2012 standard. In fact, I played an Agile 2 weeks ago and it played better than all of them, the 2012 was a tie. So I bought the damn Agile for 180....and when I got home I compared it to my Custom and the Gibby sounded better, but played the same....if you want to leave your nice LPs at home and gig with a beater that sounds good and plays great find a used Agile...hell, new they're around 300...my LP has sentimental value so it'll stay until I go...then it goes to my son. But I won't be looking at any Gibsons anytime soon...too depressing. Rant over...

I've played plenty of Gibson Los, owned a couple...and I like my Agile AL-2500 better than most of them. The older ones I've played were great, but for the price, I'll take my AL any day. I payed $175 for my Agile. I'll buy 4 more before I buy a real LP.

Guitar Center doesn't put any work into their used stuff I don't think. Shit, they don't touch the new stuff either. I don't even bother to pick up any of the electric guitars and try them when I go there. The acoustic room always seems to be well maintained though.

I feel ya man. I haven't found a single new LP at GC that really spoke to me. I don't think GC sets up their new Gibsons at all. The action is all ove ether place, and the pickups aren't even adjusted. I've left multiple times and felt Blessed that my Epiphone sounds and plays as well as it does, but always had this nagging feeling like it was only able to be "so great" compared to the potential for a Gibson.

Even though it's my brand of choice, I really think that the great Gibsons are few and far between. You have to play a LOT of LPs and then suddenly, you'll know when there's one that just speaks to you, and THAT is when you have to ask the staff for a screw driver and straight edge...so you can set it up.

If you ever start feeling like you NEED another guitar, go play a Gibson a GC. You'll either leave with a new guitar, or you'll feel better about what you already have...

That's nice...yeah I get that they don't do shit the used gear. Every amp I've gotten needed cleaning, biasing etc. But I've picked up some Charvels/Jacksons there and they've been nice players....

I'm not sure it's GC's issue. I've tried three times to buy a Les Paul, and each time I went to every small shop in my area to play whatever LPs I could find. Played Standards, custom shops, whatever they had. The only one I found that I actually liked was a refretted Norlin-era Standard. Ended up with an Epiphone that I like better than any of them.

I used to bring my tools with me to check out guitars at GC! A simple 10 second truss rod adjustment can really make the difference. Most guitars at GC NEED the truss rod tightened to get the necks straighter. Otherwise, they play like crap!

Les Pauls should have relatively straight necks. Any bow, and they are terrible to play.

This is why I bought my PRS SC245! No bullshit. Played better than every LP I tried for a good stretch. Still does. I really want a Gibson LP but I have YET to find "the one"

I too bought an Agile AL2000 for my 1st LP. Unchambered body with a bitchin transparent black flame finish for $180. I'm wondering how much nicer the 3100's are than a 2000.

I NEVER pick up a guitar anywhere and think its gonna be set up , or ever REMOTELY set up like I want it. I just bought a used LP Custom from GC, was in there FOREVER with the worst set up, ugly creme plastics etc. I rehabbed the whole guitar. And now...its this:

+1 I spent a lot of time learning how to do a great set up...changes everything.

Played an ESP LTD EC401-VF with the Dimarzio 36th's pickups the other day at my local GC and it played and sounded better than any of the Gibsons, new or used ...Kinda crazy. What surprised me was that the ESP had a full chunky neck not the "slim U" they show in the specs...Really great guitar!

I would agree with the OP to a point, but one of the best Lesters I ever played was a white '87 custom at GC Boston when they were on Comm Ave years ago, and it was a factory second. The BEST Lester I ever played was a late 70s DeLuxe cherry sunburst at Daddy's Junky Music in Dedham 25+ years ago that was beat to shit and also a factory second...and I didn't have cash with me either time...when I went back a day or two later they were gone, so someone agreed with me...

I believe you but I have to say my 2013 Hand Picked LB Top I got from Eddies is outstanding in every way and I have played allot of them also.

^^^This. I just picked up a LP trad2 that had way too much relief in the neck. Brought it home, straightened the neck out some and it was perfect. Didn't do anything else to it. Every guitar player should learn how to properly set up their instrument.

I live in europe and owned and tried many gibsons. About the setup I don't really care in the sense that I do my own anyway but I am weary if a guitar is set up high-ish. I take it as an effort to hide fret problems, small but problems.

Bottom line: Inconsistent fret jobs, from great to unbelievable (custom shop slash. amazing guitar) to unacceptable (lp classic) to frets that felt scratchy.

For some reason, I've never encountered one with a weird bow (up or down) and that is a good thing but if you pay that amount of cash for a guitar you expect decent to great fretwork and 5/10 out of those guitars didn't meet that.

It's weird but many cheaper guitars had better fretwork and that was hard to admit. I've always thought that gibsons were maybe affected by the travel and climate changes from USA to europe and had frets that popped up etc.

Their sound is a personal preference although one or two were dogs. Some were fantastic. Most were true to their name. Some woods are not meant to be guitars and those were there...Gibsons are indeed factory made instruments, I doubt that they choose their woods judging acoustic properties, only visual to their higher grade instruments. So again you have to choose.

Also, binding that was horribly fit, paint problems etc should not be there for guitars that cost so much and have the made in USA stamp.Tuning stability. There were some instances on those I've played also.

Statistically I must say that half of what I've played through the years pass as very good though not great or well made instruments for the price. I'd expect a higher percentage.

Still if you value certain things that make a gibson a gibson what it is there is no real, so readily made alternative.

For me it'd be details like nitro finish, 17 degrees pitch on the headstock, fret over binding, stuff like that. Quartersawn mahogany necks also. And of course the shape. I can't get along with many alternative lp shapes at all, visually.

Exactly. I have never bought a guitar that I didn't have to do something to make it play like I wanted it too. But a properly set up Les Paul will play like butter.

With used guitars, I think most of it is how GC took it in on trade. I've bought some that I didn't adjust a thing. They played very well right out of the box, but they clearly were cared for by the prior owner. I've bought others that were a dirty mess; GC simoly didn't touch it other than hang a tag off it and stick it in a box when I bought it.

On the set up side...
Ive a malmsteen strat with a 73 neck on her that ive had for about 18 months or so..
I always have my action a bit high but with the scallops and all the guitar was, for me, fine but still meh....
SO..... I shimmed the neck and holy f***, what an axe now.
Do it guys, it aint rocket science and with the ammount of gen out there on the net - Learn to set up your guitars!!!!

I bought a used one from Elderly music online and showed up playing like Butta. But they do a set up on all of their guitars.

Yeah...I didn't want to start a Gibson bashing event or even GC for that matter. I was just disappointed. I do a lot of buying from them..picked up a Washburn USA from them and its great. Plays awesome out of the case. Maybe LPs need more attention because they've been played more? Who knows.
