Depends on the model:

Dual Reverb = bad!
2500/4500 "MK III" = not so bad
SL-X = Xtra bad!

I thought the SLX didn't have diodes and it was the only one that didn't. Myself I have never played a JCM900.

I had a JCM900 2500 and it sounded like a Big Muff with my active pickups I had in my guitar at the time. Total shit. I hate that amp. Traded it for a 5150II!!!

Should have set it up for max clean headroom and used pedals.

used to mix a guy who payed one

i begged him weekly to chuck that soggy itchy tone ruiner

So the 2500 was the gain side of the Dual Reverb? I thought the SL-X had the xtra preamp tube, AND the diodes. But, I stand corrected! No diodes, just fuzz.

For the millionth time, NO diodes in the SLX. Fine sounding amp. There's just better Marshalls.

The 4100 sounds pretty damn good actually. The other guitarist in my band plays one (has for the last 15 years) and he gets compliments all the time from soundmen that his tone is atypical from what the reputation of a 900 is.

I once used 2 tubescreamers into a jcm 900 two channel one. I set the clean channel to crunch. It was a decent tone like that imo.

Back in the day all my friend used a metal zone on the clean channel of a 4500

I bought a 50 watt Dual Reverb head (EL34s) back when they came out around 1990. Used that head along with a 9005 power amp and 2 marshall 4x12s for 5 years straight. It was my only amp. I was always happy with the tone I had. No pedals. Straight into amp. Had a SD JB in my guitar and tuned down to D. I have heard them sound like ass, but I thought mine sounded killer. Or at least I should say I got the tone that I wanted and was very happy with it.

out of all the 900's I think that the dual reverbs or 4100's sound the worst. The 2500 and 2100 mkIII's actually are ok , the slx is the same as the mkIII except it has an added preamp tube for extra gain without the use of diodes. I actually think that the dual footswitchable master volumes on the mkIII's was a very cool feature to have stock on an amp.

no issue here, ive owned several... the 50w's sounding best with 6L6's,,,, i wish i NEVER sold that 4500 out of curiosity,,...... i think half of why people think theyre shit is because they have the amp in a wrong situation maybe......
SLX is very very good also
