You can get that neck in Brazilian rosewood too!!!!, Have only played 1, but it rang like a bell! same carve, too.

I don't know if they make rosewood an option anymore, but they have in the past, a few come up used on ebay or over at birdsandmoons.com
The one I played was used, and a little beat up, but if I could have gotten up the money,I would have got it in a second!!

I'm not a big PRS fan either. I'd rather have a Gibson of some sort for that style of guitar.

The PRS SC 245 is the guitar that may get me back in the PRS family. Can't beat the price of them either, compared to a new L.P.

The McCarty PRS guitars have a thicker body than the Custom 22 or 24's and the pickups are voiced for a more vintage tone. I have found them to be hit or miss tonewise. But when you do find a McCarty that sounds great then hold onto it. Iv'e played a few that just SANG. And some of the McCarty's with the solid rosewood necks are just SICK.

Like any PRS you have to be picky. Some sound great and some are duds.

my 1990 PRS Custom 24 plays and sounds like a dream, great guitar

i have 5 guitars right now, 3 of them mccarties. 2 of them with suhr aldrich pickups which i absolutely love. ive owned a custom 24 and 22 in the past, and both of them have been too twangy for me. the mccarty is such a perfect sound to me. it has the hugeness and thickness of a LP, but the clarity of a strat. plus, you can play a gig and not have to retune. i just love mccarties. i want to buy pretty much every one i see.

the mccarty pickups are alright, the neck pickup is really nice though. id say the mccarty pickups would sound great with a cranked marshall style amp, not with a mesa style compressed amp.

all up though, my favourite guitars bar none that ive played yet.

Right now i've got 2 of them with the stock Tremonti pups...the more i play them the more i like them. My other Tremonti has a Gibson 500T...way to twangy believe or not. Love 500t's in my Les Pauls...if the Aldrich doesn't work out I could be totally happy with the stock Tremonti pups...really good sounding pickups. Kinda reminds me of a JB with more beef and not as shrill.

I'm no PRS expert, but I have played several of them in stores. I want to love them, but I just don't. They've all sounded horrible to me and played just okay. Well, except for the McCarty models.

I played a friends McCarty a year or more ago and really liked it. I played one again last night and man, that guitar is pretty darn cool! I want one now.

I may try to either get a McCarty or a Mira in the near future (probably through trades.)

Do the McCarty models all have the same neck carve or do they come in "wide thin" and all of those other shapes? I think the Mira comes in different carves. Which one would be the closest to the McCarty?

Chris

PS - Have this clip for dessert (Pinnick and Bonamassa) > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mIfBDZEwju4

What about replacing the PRS pickups, that's what I did when I had my ce22, It made a hell of a difference. It was frickin night and day. The Dragon 2 "gayest name ever for a pickup", was super weak sounding.

Thump, does the McCarty compare more to a Les Paul or SG? I have some SG gas, so I am curious.....

Never played a PRS, the few PRS owners I know, wouldn't even let me touch the guitar :gethim:

You know what? I failed to point out that the McCarty I played a few nights ago actually had PRS "Dragon" pickups installed in it. The owner said they were hotter and sounded better to him. I think the first McCarty I tried had the stock pickups. There were 2 years between them, so I'm not sure how the Dragon pickups compared.

I was splitting the neck pickup and getting some great stratty type of tones from those Dragon pickups.
The dragons are a lot hotter, have a set in a ltd. ed. chamberd body PRS, I like them better than the stk. mc's, but I dont like the stk mc bridge pup at all, the neck is tolerable, not sure what kind of tones you wanna get, would not let that stop me from buying one if I really liked it. Would be very interested to hear those suhr aldridge pups in one. { neck and bridge } jski59 seemed to really like them, would still like to be able to split the neck pup { I'm sure you can }

Does that mean you like the aldrich pups better or worse than the tremonti's ?? Have a tremonti in the bridge of a McCarty now, was thinking about trying the aldrich pups out. -thanks- Jim

JT...I guess your referring to me...if so...I like the Tremonti pups. The more I play them the more I like them. I love 500T's in Pauls because they really bring out the grind in those guitars imo but in the Tremonti, it was way to bright. Generally i prefer Alnico loaded pups but when I went on my Les Paul kick a few years back the only pup I liked in them was the 500T. I just want to try the Aldrich out becuase of curiosity...love his tone, and the pickup sounds like its up my alley build wise. But I'm perfectly happy with the Tremonti pickups in the Tremonti guitar. I will say this, I owned 2 Custom 24's in the past and I didn't like the stock pups in those...in fact I could never really bond with the C24's anyway. Actually they kinda turned me off of PRS till I bought the new Tremontis. I honestly haven't played guitar this much years...usually it was to write, rehearse and play live but now I'm just sitting down and jamming again...the Tremonti guitars have had everything to do with that. They're just fun to play...

I would think the Tremonti in the McCarty would be a good match.

That's a fair price. Not a screaming deal, but not a rip-off either. I've seen them go anywhere from $1250 to $1500 for that type of McCarty.

This is the one I'm drooling over. The color is perfect, the top is decent, but it has dots instead of birds. Not that big of a deal, though. The price seems right, doesn't it? ($1,375 shipped)

Chris
Price is ok. Not a great deal, you'd have trouble getting that back out of it with the current market for a non-10 top, non birded PRS. I'd probably take awhile. I'd think you'd at least be able to get a similar McCarty with birds or a 10 top in that range...a little more and you'd probably get both.

Oh really? Hmmm, I didn't realize that. In that case, I may sit quiet for a short while and only pounce when I see a nicer guitar for around that same price.

Chris

I maybe put that a bit strong. It's a totally solid price, I've just seen them go for that price with either birds or a 10-top. The market being so crappy now, lots of guitars are sitting. JB just sold his McStd. with birds pretty cheap. I felt bad not telling him to ask for more, but I put stuff FS at a pretty reasonable price and it sits most of the time. No birds and no 10 will just make for a harder sale if you decide to dump it. You won't likely find anything in that price range(with birds or a 10) other than on the boards or occasionally ebay. If you dig that one grab it!

Hey Chris,

Again, that's my old guitar and I think it's a good price...I think I sold it to him for about $50 more. And he was a good guy to deal with.

He doesn't mention it, but there are two small chips down by the volume knob...take a look. They were there when I bought it, but they never bothered me. Just fyi...

Regarding the 10 top, I wouldn't waste my money really, unless it was REALLY awesome...and then, you just have to go through them all to find a good one. I bought my McTrem for the trem (duh) and it has a 10 top. To be honest, I don't think it looks that much better. I actually preferthe looks of my old one (the one for sale) without the binding.

Anyway, if your a high gain player, I wouldn't think twice about putting in the Aldrich pickups. Just awesome. The neck pickup is really nice too. One suprise is how good they sound split...nice and twangy. Although the fact that this guitar has a trem may be a factor...

JUST BUY IT ALREADY!!!!
