Went to my local gc to return a few pedals ... ahem and any way I see Splawn there!! Not only is it the Quick rod it's the "3 channel" version from 2006 holy awesome I know Friedman is the Flavor of the year but damn Splawn is pretty Badass. It's like a good marshall with recto low end I love it really makes me want to try a Nitro or try this amp through a better cab. Good day good day lol

Try a newer model. More gain and saturation and better clean channel.

Played a Nitro a couple of years ago. Sounded great, but the taper on the master volume went from off to super loud instantly.

Has that been addressed on the newer models?

The Quickrod is high on my list of amps I want to buy.

The master volume on most 100 watt amps I have played are like that. The newer Splawns have the loop volume control, so you can use that and it's a much smoother taper. You can get it down to whisper volume and it still sounds full and thick. That's another reason to get a new model. I had a 2007 and I used to keep a volume pedal in the loop for just that reason, now it's built in.

You mean the '3 pre'? I hear they are the best. Tried a Nitro, was 'meh' for me. But I have played a QR, liked it. Cool amp.

That's my experience with it also. My VH4 is like that to a certain degree so I'd mirror what BF says above. I'm always interested when people comment that the Herbert is great at bedroom volumes when it's a 180W poweramp.

really want to try one. hell of amp on paper for what they selling for used these days.

Same with the quick rod I had. Nice amp but very loud at low volumes .It was a earlier model and as much as I tried I couldn't bond with the amp. I would be interested in trying a newer model to see the difference.

Yes I do mean the 3 pre

LOVE my 2012 QR (with matching Small Block loaded 4x12). I bought the whole rig a year and a half ago for $850. Best sub-$1K I've ever spent on tone period!

Having said all of that... I mostly use the Splawn for when I'm playing higher-gain hard rock stuff. My Friedman amps have been superior at being able to roll-off the guitar volume and retain dynamics, feel, etc. But I still think very highly of the Splawn, which is why it's still around.

I LOVE my Quick Rod. It's a 2013 Low B+ version. Excels at everything from funk to Swedish Melo-Death! At least I think it does. Takes boosts like a champ and solid effects loop. The Loop Master is great as well. I really want a Nitro though...

You don't hear a lot of talks about Splawn around here anymore. I still have an early QR with shared EQ, looks like JMP 2203 nad a Splawn 4x12..still like it ;)

I told ya so

Seriously, glad you finally got to play one. Having the right speakers/cab is a huge variable with these amps. I'm going to be a huge proponent of the Splawn Small Blocks. Made by either Eminence or WGS (depends) they are basically 55w Greenback clones I believe. Anyway, sound killer with this amp.

Some complain that the Nitro has too much low end. I've never played one. I do play QR a fair bit in Drop C and the articulation (again with the right speakers/cab) is mind numbing. I'd love to have a newer QR some day with all the bells and whistles (B+, new/old switch, mid-cut switch, loop volume) but that could get a bit pricy (for me) at $2,300+ so a used QR around $1,000 with a volume taper in the loop, EQ in the loop, and OD pedal is where it is at.

I keep going back and forth on whether or not to send Scott my QR and have him add the "New/Old" and "Mid Cut" features. Mine is already Low B+ so I can't do the other option.

My Hagen is a little bit like that. But my Friedman has a really smooth taper so it is possible for me to play even when the kids are asleep. I would like that on every amp :)

I have an old 3 pre and it's been the only amp I've held onto since 06. There's just something about it that I love. It is loud but it's also full of dynamics. Tight crunch and low end punch, cleans up awesome with rolling back the volume, gigged for 10 yrs and never failed me once

^^^ knock on some wood lol
I've retired it from gigging and have been using an AX8 ;)

Knocking on wood with this setup as well, lol  :D

I have a 2010 QR. One of the best amps for the money, period. Some people nitpick about the honky mids in the voicing, but sometimes I hear it, sometimes I don't. I think if you have the right speakers it balances out. Having said that, V30s are not good with this amp. Way too much mids in your face and can't hear lows or highs that well. Eminence Wizards are a great speaker with this amp. Greenbacks and Lynchbacks are great with it as well. Haven't tried anything else like Creambacks or Small Blocks so can't comment on them personally.

The QR is one of those amps that you can dime the gain and all the boosts and doesn't get muddy at all; still retains its aggressive character.
