First up, the Splawn Nitro. What a great sounding amp. The ONLY downfall seems to be the master volume. The amp needs to be turned up loud before the killer tone comes out. Maybe it was the KT88's? Either way, it was a great sounding amp.

Fortin Cali... another killer sounding amp. I would really like to have one

5150III... Damn, this amp has a ton of gain. I was really surprised. Wouldnt mind owning one.

Eleven rack... honestly, it sucks. Nothing more can be said

Friedman modded Voodoo V-plex. Had BE and JBE... cool tones and sounded great with some nice headroom. I wish it had some more gain though ;)

Played a bunch of different cabinets as well. All in all, a fun day...but the almost 6 hours of driving really sucked.

Big thanks to lolzgreg for hosting and it was great to see the regulars and a new face. Playing was killer as usual and now I need to practice a lot more

Ralph... you officially suck ;) Harry, and Kage too

Cool man ! It was good times...... Your Cameron sounded really good, as well as that cab. So those speakers you have in there are labeled G12-80 ? After today Im not sure which speakers to load in my splawn cab. I liked Greg's Heritage greenies and the speakers in your cab.

Son of a Bitch...wish I coulda been there!

Good times. It took me about 2.5 hours to get home in what normally would take 1 hour because i have commercial plates and have to stay off certain highways.

I was really suprised at how good Greg's Engl cab sounded. One of the better V30 loaded cabs I've heard.

The Splawn Nitro sounded really good, but needed a little volume. But for what i consider a little volume may not be an issue to some. But it did sound good.

The Cameron's and Fortin's...........yeah we know they rock. :D

Greg's baron amp which is an XTC clone sounds better than most XTC's I've heard. :D

11R..........like i said, i don't get it. It was simply embarassing to hear that junk box next to real amps, it got trounced. All i did was pull up a patch, shut the cab sim off, add a graphic EQ, a tube screamer, and just a little delay. It sounded like a broken AM radio compared to the amps. Unless there's something that i didn't set right, that thing is overhyped junk.

And i used a Mesa 2:90 poweramp with the 11R. With an Axe-Fx, i got good tones pretty easily and the Axe-Fx is supposed to be the hard one to tweak, so i know the poweramp isn't the issue.

Great hanging out with everyone. And after hearing Carl, i need to work on my picking.

No. They made it the wrong way by making ten just louder instead of making it go all the way up to eleven.

Cool story, Dave. :)

What do you think of the reliability of the 5150???

Yeah the Nitro is one of those amps that opens up once you get the master up a little. However the new Nitros come with a volume control in the loop , kinda like a built in attenuator. You can set the loop volume low and turn up the master without it being so loud, so you get that tone at lower volumes. My Nitro is a little older and was built before they started adding the loop volume control. I may eventually send it to splawn to be updated.

Im not sure who you are directing the question to but I can say that Ive owned a few 5150's over the years and never had a problem with any of them. I have heard good things about them being pretty road worthy. Considering the price of a used 5150 I think its one of the best bang for the buck metal amps.

Sounds like you guys had a good time. Dave, I'm sorry my Friedman doesnt have enough gain for you. :D

Just stick one of these in the loop. Worked great with the Nitro I had. Not sure if the guy makes them anymore, but they were only $20 new. You could probably make one for a few bucks.

Dave,

Have you tried a Marsha? If you liked those amps you mentioned I think you would love a Marsha.

You're Friedman sounds great though, it's got a nice fat bottom and smooth top. While it doesn't have flamethrower gain like the Fortin and Cameron it still have a good amount for a lot of styles.

I don't run my that way - I use studio monitors - so take this with with a grain of salt...

Were you using the Output To Amp jacks? I think that the Output To Amp jacks on the back and the front default to the "Amp In" output setting, which gives you only everything in front of the amp sim...they're meant to go into the front end of a head/combo using the 11 just for pedal effects. So it'd be like running the tube screamer straight into your power amp which would definitely suck. I think the Main Outputs default to Rig Out. You can use Rig Out, or Rig Out No Cab to still get the amp sim but globally bypass the cab/mics. That way you don't have to go into each preset and bypass the cab.

If you set it to Rig Out or Rig Out No Cab and it still sucks, then I think you are out of luck. :D

Had an awesome time at the Long Beach Ampfest! Learned much! Good seeing you guys. And a big thanks to Greg for putting it together, and for the fine BBQ afterward! Very cool.

Dave, thanks for bringing the CCV. Really enjoyed jamming on that amp. Very cool wet/dry set up you have going. Your cab sounds great. If you ever decide to sell it, please let me know!

Other highlights included checking out Dan's awesome Anderson guitars ... really liked that Tele! And of course the Fortin Cali mod. The Splawn Nitro was also great ... really heavy ad fat tones. Greg's 5150 III was also a nice surprise, as was his Baron amp. Also he has a nice assortment of cabs ... I agree with Dan about the Engel with V30's. He also has the best sounding Recto cab I've ever heard! I usually have to fight with those over-sized cabs to get any clarity, but Greg's (for some unknown reason), sounds great ...

The only downer was that 11R. After hearing all these great amps, I must admit it was rather weak. Maybe it would sound better as a straight DI into the DAW?

Thanks again guys.

ps. Ralph, Harry, Kage? Tsk Tsk ... NO SOUP FOR YOU! COME BACK ... ONE YEAR!

PS. I also enjoyed jamming on the Friedman modded Voodoo V-plex. I think Greg had a boost out front ... was very cool.

sounds like a great time!

Good to see some love for the Splawn....something that doesnt happen too much over here
