Played the EDDIE VAN HALEN III HEAD today

I remember when they came out I was in my local shop with cash in hand for the half stack until I played through it. I really did try to like it, especially being a big EVH fan. It just didn't impress me and I left empty handed. I can't compare it to my Herbert in any way really. It looks cool though!

Yep, great amp! Although I always thought of it as more of a "poor man's XTC".

I had one. It was okay, but didn't track well without A LOT and I stress A LOT of mic placement and post eq, comp, and wave form correction. Out of a Randall RM100, Splawn Quickrod, Splawn Nitro, EVHIII, 6505+, Diamond Phantom, Diezel Herbert, and the newest addition a 6534+ you are not going to believe what amp has the easiest to set up, smoothest, tightest, most aggressive, clear, and most importantly level wave form while tracking.

Yep the cheapest amp I own. Go figure. I never would have thought since I was never a fan of Peavey. They have got it right with the 6534+. They didn't get the bias right, but after I biased it at 32MA on the hottest tube it absolutely roars. Get one of these for a backup. You wont be sorry. Got mine for $850.00 brand new shipped. I was going to send it off to get it modded. I'm now kinda torn.

Yep, this is a sick amp. I liked it more than some amps I've had that cost 3x-4x as much.

Sorry folks but I think that the EVH III does not even deserve to be mentioned in the same thread as the Herbert :p
Congrats on your new amp though!

total bollox ive owned a herbert and matching cab and i own a evh 50 watter and all i can say is the herby is good for scooped mid bottom end stuff heavy shit but the evh shines in harmonic content and pretty much covers all bases from sparkle to plexi crunch to awesome heavy shit plus the herbert is way over priced i think a vh4 kills it and also owned a fortin modded marshall jmp and that kills it too

Somebody didn't play their Herbert without the mid-cut on. That sucks the life out of the amp IMO. I never use it unless i need to fit something into a mix while recording. I'm also not into the mid-scooped heavy crap. I use the Herbert in a pop punk band. :D
I won't touch a VH4 with a 10ft pole after playing the one i rented for a studio session in Los Angeles.

Jester22, don't know what Herbert you were playing but I will tell you that properly biased the Herbert will spank and kill from sparkling clean to over the top tight crunch and totally brutal to completely unique and dominating modern high gain. There's nothing out there that even comes close to Herbert IMO.

Herbert is King for a hell of a lot more than scooped mids...

The reference to the III being a poor man's Herbert was literal.

I own a herbert and a evh 5153 and love both amps, i didnt like the herbert with the evh cab but i think the 5153 sounds awesome thru thr evh cab.

Both amps are 3 ch but they dont sound close enough for me to consider it a poor mans herbert, i plan on keeping both amps but i like them because they sound different.

The 5153 cab is equiped with G12M25. Not the best choice for Herbie!

Yea it was bad, my uberkab and mesa cab sound so much better with the herb.

I tried a 5150III 100 watt at GC... and all I kept thinking was I am glad I have a herbert... it sounded thin and somewhat lifeless, and when I switched channels it would make a loud click / popping sounds.

I guess if you are Eddie you can make any amp sound great!!
