So Will invited me over to check out his Suhr Modern Carve Top last night because he knows I'm gassing for one. Well.... thanks A LOT Will... now I'm completely obsessed...

Also - I got to play through Will's brand new Mark V, which sounded killer. He let me dial in my own MKIV setting on that mode of Channel 3 and the thing just sounds exactly like one... The clean channel Will already had dialed in beautifully as well...

Anyway... Will's guitar has a Mahogany neck with Pao Ferro fretboard and Mahogany body w/ 3/4" quilt maple top in Whaleburst Blue. Absolutely gorgeous... Neck had a very light satin finish. Playing wise it suited me to a tee, except Will has it set up for .010 strings and the action was a bit high on the higher frets, so I couldn't pull off my usual ripping lead riffs ( ;)  ). I would for sure get mine setup with a .009 set of strings... I was blown away by the tone, especially the SSV neck pickup. That pickup with the Mark V channel 3 set like I like it was just singing with beautiful sustain - just killer... The only thing I didn't like besides the setup was the Gotoh Floyds they use. I don't know why Suhr uses 'em, but they suck to me. The fine tuners suck, the bar cannot be set so that it just swings around like an OFR. Yuck.... When I get my guitar, I'm either supplying an OFR or going without a locking bridge because I hate the Gotoh Floyd.

Anyway... I really love the Modern Carve Top and will definitely be getting one as soon as I can move a couple of my other guitars... Will's is killer and maybe he'll post up a photo of it. Great guitar..

Once again - Thanks to Will for having me over!

AWESOME!!!

I had mixed feelings about the earlier versions of the Suhrs but the newer ones that I have played have decimated/killed every guitar that I own lol! Even the new lower end models that he is putting out are incredible IMHO

No prob Steve, dude you still rip with the 10's, was great hearing all those Guthrie licks, I've been listening to Erotic Cakes again during work because of that! :) After you left I got off my lazy ass and retuned and setup the guitar the way it's supposed to be, lowered the bridge posts and adjusted the truss rod a bit, now it's so close to the frets that I'm not used to it anymore :) I should've did that before you came over but work has been hectic, the B, G and A were completely flat hahaha.

Here's the guitar in question

Glad to hear ya got her all setup and ready to go now, man! And you are way too kind on the playing comments...

That thing is beautiful! How's the Gotoh feel? Is it nice and springy like an OFR, or is it stiffer like an Edge Pro/Schaller?

Of course not, silly. My coffee table is covered in endangered blue whale skin, of course. Hence the blue whaleburst quilt top... Sheesh...

I highly recommend it!

It will never hit the classifieds, my friend... If Will decides to sell this one before I get mine, I will be at his place in ten minutes with the cash no matter what I have to do to get the money...

I don't see Will parting with this one though...

Yeah it's pretty stiff, stiffer than what I like, I would probably recommend getting a Standard Trem.

Yeah, especially since all the standard trem Suhrs I've played stayed in tune as well as Floyded ones regardless of the level of bar debauchery I inflicted.

couldnt you remove a spring and adjust the spring claw to loosen it up? I love the Gotoh Floyds, I like that the fine tuners are tilted back

The stiffness is more in how the bar moves, its a screw in type, so it doesn't swing like on a OFR and the fine tuners are pretty stiff, but those don't bother me. Might be a way to loosen the bar, not sure.

I don't think there is a way to loosen those bars...

Steve

I'm pretty sure there is a set screw to tighten the arm ala prs. At least there is on my axis and I'm pretty sure its the same floyd suhr uses.
Aloha, Rob.
