I'm back in love with active pickups! Particularly, Fishman Fluences. I have the Will Adlers and the KSE's right now. I've also had the Moderns and Classics, and I've loved them all.

I want to try some other set. I'm trying to decide between all of the active-voiced models.

Moderns - I've already had a set and loved them. These would be the safest bet, but I like trying different stuff out as well. Plus the passive voice on these, while usable, doesn't excite me all that much, TBH.

Devins - The clips sounds pretty cool! Like fatter and warmer moderns, exactly the opposite of the KSE's. However, the focus on these seems to the be the single coil mode. For me, it's nice to have a single coil mode available, but not necessary. I'd rather have a killer passive-sounding humbucker voice, and the passive voice on these seems to me like more of an afterthought. But maybe I'm wrong?

Tosins - Don't really know much about these other than one of the voices is a tweaked version of Moderns' Voice 1. If so, does anyone know what way is it tweaked in?

So which ones do you think I should go for next?

Thanks!

It’s been a while since I last had my various fluence’s. I had a modern and Abasi set in the same guitar. They sounded almost identical to me. The Abasi just had a bit more upper mids, an additional mode (some single coil one I think) and I remember the cleans being a little nicer, but still nothing to write home about, still sterile for that. The Devin I remember not liking as much as others. I remember it sounded rounder, maybe less aggressive, more low mid hump

Thanks! Which other Fluences did you have?

I’ve had the Moderns, KSE’s & Abasi. Those were my 3 favorites. I’ve tried in other guitars and compared to those the Devin, Carpenter & Merrow sets. Didn’t like those ones as much. Fwiw, earlier this year I swapped the KSE’s in my 1986 Schecter back to its stock EMG’s and MUCH prefer its stock EMG’s. A lot more ripping and aggressive sounding

I actually really like the Merrow bridge pickup. It’s kind of medium high ouput with a growl to the low mids and lots of clarity. Actually I initially found it to have TOO MUCH clarity, or rather way too extended and uncompressed high frequency content. This was resolved by engaging the “HF Tilt” pad on the base of the pickup.

Are the Merrows still being produced? I thought he left Fishman.

These guys change brands more than underwear! (I only suspect)

I have Moderns in 2 guitars, and just love them. One's in drop D and the passive tone seems to work better. More beef, I guess you could say. The other (identical) guitar is in drop B and the active tone definitely works better. So at least in my little universe, I see value in both tones but they're dependent on tuning. I'm a serial pickup swapper but these are staying in place, and that says a lot.
