I'm looking buy a new cab for recording/live use. I currently own a couple of Bogner cabs from the 90's. I have had these cabs for years and am looking for a different compliment for my current rig. I'm a modded Marshall/Cameron/IIC+ guy. Thinking about the following: Cameron(H30), Boogie Traditional(V30), Friedman(Scumback or Gback & V30 combo), & Mills(V30).

I would certainly appreciate any opinions/obeservations you guys would be kind enough to offer. Especially those who have had success recording any of these cabs....or others.

Thx!
Todd

For recording i always prefer marshall cabs. They seem to cut better and just work. I had a cameron 4x12 and in the room it was thicker sounding than my marshall , but it was to dark and boomy going to tape for me , almost to pushed back sounding. The extra thickness and bass doesn't always work for recording as i'm sure you know... generally for recording i use less bass and gain than i would for live.

I love h30 anny / CL80 x pattern in my marshall cabs ... and or a good set of v30's depending on the amp ...

FWIW, I'm diggin' my new Engl 2x12 Pro E212VHB cabs loaded with stock Celestion V30
They sound tight and focused (speakers are not even close to broken in though); I went for two 2x12 cabs instead of one 4x12 E412VGB since I find them more focused, and warmer in the midrange. I don't play metal these days, and I use standard tuning, and I have a direct rig that I plan to use for recording so can't comment on this aspect. They have an extra large 4x12 E412XXLB cab that is supposed to have more bottom, haven't tried this.

These are the best built cabs I've ever owned (I owned Marshall, Fender, SoundCity, ADA, and a few others back in the day); weigh a ton though...makes my AC30 feel almost light and portable in comparison. I'd imagine the 4x12 cabs would be very heavy.

worth a look while you are looking IMO. I noticed Diezel cabs are not on your list, I've heard great things about them, never tried them, plenty of D fans here would have experience with these and may chime in?

I just picked up a Marshall 1960BHW and have to say that I'm pleasently surprised. The G12-H30's really sound great with my CCV. These aren't the 70th anniversary reissues that come in the Cameron cabinets. I didn't really care for those. They were way too bright IMO. I currently use Scumbacks in my other cabinets.

Here's a great looking cabinet too.

I have the Marshall 1960BHW and i love it with my Jubilees.

Diezel 2x12 FL with Celestion G12-65's. I love it. Only recorded at a live show, but sounded good. I would assume the 4x12 would be killer too.

Check out VHT Fatbottoms. The oversized recto cabs are pretty good, I think one would sound awesome with Mesa C90's.

Old Marshall up and including the JCM800 era cabs record well.

Have you considered just replacing the speakers in your Bogner 4x12? My Bogner 4x12 has V30. I typically suggest Bogner cabs as for me its the best one of the bunch of 5 (Bogner, VHT, Splawn, Marshall and Soldano)

According to Brad the Cameron cabs have the G12H30 Heritage's. I asked him about it back in January.

Also I loved the Uberkab, same speaker setup i use in my VHT, They are both great, just different flavors...Just try em all..

My next venture will be with some 65's however.

Well if that's what he says I'd assume they do. Either way I didn't care for the 70th Anniversarys.

Yeah, me either!!! I had one paired with a V30 in a Dr Z best 2X12 cab and while it sounded really good with the Engl Savage and decent with the Shiva, it sounded like doggy doo doo with the Atomica.

Well I just confirmed with Art and his Cameron has 70th Anny's in it. :scared:

I really like the Scumback Blackback H LHDC 65 watters. Not as bright as G12H30's. No harsh mids or trebs either.

My Avatar is the best sounding cab I have heard paired with my mkiii or quickrod. It has T75s and V30s in it. Maybe I just happened to get a good one. Crushes every cab I have ever had.

I have a couple Splawn cabs and theyre just plain awesome

The cameron ccv, bones and the other modded cameron that josh had sound much better threw the cameron cab loaded with G1230 s than the bogner V 30 loaded cab and a VHTFatbottom loaded with V 30,and dave friedmans amps sounded better with the V30/greenback combo than with the scumbacks, just my opinion

I had the choice between essentially any cab I wanted, and went with the Bogner Ubercab (V30's and T75's in X pattern). Just sounds so great with that combo, but to capture it's true sound you have to mic up both different types of speakers in the studio, which is always a hassle for me, but I'm not good at mic positioning to start with. If you get it right, it sounds killer and cuts like a chainsaw. The clarity and treble mixture is perfect. I play metalcore and heavier (and lighter, all the way down to blues), and professionally play metalcore in my band as well, and it is just so great.

How about this since most everyone is going to say Bogner or the other usual suspects. Nothing against Bogners...they are fantastic cabs.

Mojave 4x12. Best sounding cab I've ever owned. Not really much of a contest either. Maybe sah5150 will chime in...pretty sure he uses them as well.

One of the worst gear mistakes I've made is not replacing mine when I lost 2 of them in a fire...when I had the money to do so. Big mistake.

One of the best sounding cabs I have heard is the Genz Benz 412 G Flex. At first whend I heard it it was a wall shaker and very flat sounding. This cab belongs to good friend of mine. I have been raving about WGS speakers for awhile I love em. So he ordered 2 retro 30s with 2 reapers loaded them into that cab and oh my god did it sound like no other. I am really thinking about doing the same. I dont know too much about the genz benz cabs but man set up like this it sounded so awesome. He recorded some tracks and it recorded nicley as well.

I was part of a 4x12 cab shootout some years ago(before RT existed) and unfortunately wasnt recorded but there were witnesses there to verify this...Diezel front load, bogner, peavey, marshall, engl, mesa recto, orange, and a few others, and the diezel was the clear winner...
