Atomic Amps

I have a lead on a local 1959 HW for $1700. It's in great condition but has been "upgraded" by a respected local tech.

Here's what's been done:

-Sozo vintage capacitors
-Sprauge Atom resistors
-Carbon comp resistors
-F & T filter caps 68 spec
-Negative feedback wired 8ohm

I know on paper these sound like good/high quality subs but how will they effect the sound / value of the HW specifically. I'm interested in an example that sounds like a great vintage un-modded (read: no extra gain or voicing change) classic Plexi.

I'll be playing it later so that's, of course, a big part of the decision right there. Looking for some thoughts on this, though.

Thanks!

Tom

Can't figure out whether this is sarcasm or not. Anyone else?

Is there a reason you did'nt use mustards instead ?
I didn't use anything. I'm considering purchasing the amp and this is what is has. I didn't get an explanation but it's a moot point.

I think 1700$ is a little steep, those are not expensive mods. I would try asking 15. But I haven't been looking at the market on these lately.

There's been no gain mods as far as I can tell. It sounds like he was just trying to "upgrade" the amp. I'm sure most people wouldn't even be able to tell the difference over stock.

I've seen these go for quite a bit less than 1700. Personally I would need to see the work before I bought. Sozo caps definitely take out some high end but in this amp it may not be a bad thing. I would not recommend Sozos for any high gain applications though. The amp might sound really good. No way to know without trying it.

once broken in, Sozo caps sounds really good IMO. Especially in new Marshalls that can be quite brittle and harsh. Upgraded a 1959RR once with Soso's (long gone by now). But that really gave the amp a little sweeter character. It's very subtle I have to add... so adding sozo's in a 1959HW would probably just move it a tiny tiny bit closer to a vintage amp... still the magic lies in those old transformers, something you won't get. 1700,-? Steep... i'd save for a Metro or a cheap used Wizard (little different but killer) if possible.

Still, if it's a Marshall you want.. a HW will be more reliable than a vintage amp, and you won't have to worry. Something that you definitely more than appreciate if you play rock gigs.
