For 80's rock to shred playing which do you prefer and why? Have a clip or vid of you favorite example of your choice please post it. Oh and this includes the option to use a boost/OD pedal.

I voted SLO because I know I can plug my guitar straight in and get the tone I love. The Plexi would take more tweaking (boosts, EQ, etc).

+1

 I love the SLO's but they just have something missing. Deep down this HAS TO BE TRUE or they would be the number one hands down amp of all time. They just don't have that one something that makes them complete. Kinda like they are missing something in the body of the tone category for me. Play them for a bit of time but then....... they gotta go. And I don't seem to find even a decent majority of guys that keep them LONG TERM, like guys do the plexi's. This to me says PLEXI all the way...pedal or no pedal for that extra whatever. The Slo just will not get that plexi coverage. Just my own opinion. But you don't take a knife to a gun fight either.

Plexi by 100 miles for me. Need proof? Van Halen's first four albums vs. the 5150 album with Sammy and the SLO.

OK then, thread closed?

So Clapton, Lynch and DeMartini were wrong! j/k Curt. Yeah those albums had better tone but the SLO is killer.

The main problem with the 5150 album was that Eddies rig and recording style had become so processed over the years that it's not a fair comparison compared to Eddie's earlier stuff.

Yeah but, i wonder what VH1 would sound like if you went back in time and stole Eddies Marshall and gave him an SLO. The great thing about an SLO is, buy a used one for $2400, and you can sell it for $2400.

You mean when they got their best tones or years later when they started playing Soldano's? :D

Or buy a used Plexi for $400 and sell it later for $4000.

I think if Eddie had an SLO on the early VH stuff his tone wouldn't have been as good. He would have had more gain available to him and he would have used it.

Dan I appreciate what your're saying. Two amps that seem to be a tried and true no loss investment are the SLO and XTC. People are always buying those.

Curt you're coming into this thread swinging ain't ya. Yeah some of the best tones ever created came from Plexi's no doubt about it.

Eddie must have listened to those first few albums and realized how crappy and generic his tone was....then moved on to greener pastures.
