Eddie must have listened to those first few albums and realized how crappy and generic his tone was....then moved on to greener pastures. :thumbsup:

George punchin hard into the thread! :D

Dan I appreciate what your're saying. Two amps that seem to be a tried and true no loss investment are the SLO and XTC. People are always buying those.

Curt you're coming into this thread swinging ain't ya. Yeah some of the best tones ever created came from Plexi's no doubt about it.

Funny thing is, the 2 times i played an SLO i hated it. But i think something had to be wrong with it since i couldn't get nearly the same amount of gain i hear people get on clips and videos and whatnot. If it's anything like the Avenger then i guess it can even sound good at low volumes.

:confused: I love the SLO's but they just have something missing. Deep down this HAS TO BE TRUE or they would be the number one hands down amp of all time. They just don't have that one something that makes them complete. Kinda like they are missing something in the body of the tone category for me. Play them for a bit of time but then....... :thumbsdown: they gotta go. And I don't seem to find even a decent majority of guys that keep them LONG TERM, like guys do the plexi's. This to me says PLEXI all the way...pedal or no pedal for that extra whatever. The Slo just will not get that plexi coverage. Just my own opinion. But you don't take a knife to a gun fight either. :lol: :LOL:
If you can't play it loud, it isn't gonna sound great. So off it goes to try to find the next 100 watt amp with massive headroom to play at TV volume. :)

Well if you think about it, he obviously moved on and never returned to that tone. He must have not liked it for some reason. :confused:

Can't argue. However when players talk about EVHs tone you know they mean his early tone.

Soldano or XTC used around $2400

Used SLP for $900, HW for $1500-1600 = minimum $800 bucks left over for other goodies or not as pissed off wife :yes:

Your monikor...

Zak = Marshalls
Lynch = Marshalls
Yngwie = Marshalls

:confused: Not sure where this is going? Played my last show with a plexi. Sumbitch was SOO loud I got the, ' Can you turn it down some ' request. :lol: :LOL: I have run several Slo's and while I love what they do, I was able to change gears and avoid the buy it because it was the next thing I thought I was interested in owning trip. :lol: :LOL: Plexi's just have a solid floor of tone to work with or build upon. :yes: but like we discussed a few phone calls back George, some plexi's just don't sound as good as others. I have played a few that I walked away from just like the Slo's.

Yeah but, i wonder what VH1 would sound like if you went back in time and stole Eddies Marshall and gave him an SLO. The great thing about an SLO is, buy a used one for $2400, and you can sell it for $2400.

Or buy a used Plexi for $400 and sell it later for $4000. :lol: :LOL:

I think if Eddie had an SLO on the early VH stuff his tone wouldn't have been as good. He would have had more gain available to him and he would have used it. :rock:

Got my used 67 plexi for $1,000 (1991). I can probably sell it for 3x my original cost not taking into consideration inflation, etc. I like the SLO, but Marshall is where it is at....
Here! Here! the truth has been quoted, so now you can close the thread. :rock:

I bought a 50 watt short head tremolo Plexi in 1992 for $800 and a 50 JCM800 for $400 in 1994. Too bad my Output tranny took a shit in the Plexi.

All this talk of Eddie changing his sound because it sucked and he wanted it better is killing me. Artists are always pushed by the powers that be to make a new record that sounds a little different then the last, also Eddie's writing style changed when Sammy came around and he started with the keyboards all the time, I think the fat chorusy sound in the later records may have suited the new songs and his less aggressive playing. Also times change, look at the change in Lifeson's sound after Permanent Waves. That new concert of Rush he's playing those ghastly Hughes and Ketners, they sound big but they don't sound as good as the rhythm guitars on Hemispheres, not even close. VH is all about the first 4 records, end of story, almost anyone my age that was in high school when they came out will tell you the same thing. Diver Down sucked and that was that... People were crushed by DD, it was a fukkin disaster of a record, especially after Fair Warning. It was a bad idea letting Dave run the band. Who knows maybe they were to drunk to actually write songs and just stole old 60's crap.

Now you can close the thread. :D
