Turns out the guitar I was going to trade for has a poplar body...mine is ash. Both are EBMM Silhouettes.

I have tried a few pups in my ash silo and each time it still sounds thin, bright and lacking 'fatness'. Today I called EBMM and found out that the silo's come with 250k pots

Maybe a simple switch to a 500k will bring my guitar to life??

I'm still curious about poplar vs ash though ;)

I've got several poplar bodied guitars. I use Duncan distortion picups in all of them. It's wierd - even thought they are the same wood, some sound better with 250k's, some with 500. If I didn't like the sound, I would just change it, and then it would usually sound better whatever I changed it to. kinda wierd, I guess I just "play it by ear".

The type of wood has a negligible impact on tone. Not none, but minor.

That's why the instrument is called an electric guitar, not a wooden guitar.

You better tell the guitar builders to stop sourcing woods , they could just use any timber.

If you can provide me with their phone numbers, I'll increase the number of minutes on my cell phone plan so as to enable me not to run over the limit when I notify the luthiers.

I can understand them getting high quality woods for looks, people like their fancy flamed burst tops and all, but as far as affecting sound quality, it is a negligible impact.

After all, tone is in your fingers. Isn't that what you guys always say?*

Your pickups and strings make more of a difference than the wood. Then throw in your amp to the mix, and you can safely ignore the wood issue.

*I actually disagree with that line of thinking.

Every factor contributes, to discount timber is silly.

I'm not discounting it. I'm saying it's minor.

Of a list of 40 things that affect guitar tone, wood would be about 35th on the list.

I'm sure you're all talk and won't record the conversation, however.

I am most appreciative of your partial list.

Do you normally record your telephone conversations?

Depending on the circumstances, yes.

I am frequently put on a recorded line when dealing with customer service issues, but that is not my doing.

How does one record a phone call? Is that a feature on the fancy new telephone machines?

Might be wise to let those luthiers know you're recording them since it's illegal to record conversations with only one party knowing about it in CA.

As long as EVERYONE here promises not to tell them all that I posted their phone conversations here, I don't see it as a problem.

Done.

I really have to do everything around here.

You've really made my day with that email. I appreciate the consistency in your trolling.

I am well pleased that you enjoyed the email by tacitly admitting that I am the most humorous poster at RT.

But I am the farthest thing from a troll. Every thread I create is guitar based (except for the ones in the off topic forum). I have proven that I am a real guitar player.

In fact, that Joe Satriani clip in the other thread, downloaded by about 50 people?

Not really JS. It's your old buddy AMAQ, I just added some crowd noise.

Not one person didn't think it was JS.
