Port City users! What do you think of the OS 212 ?

Hey guys!

I was actively searching for a good 412 to my Marshall KK JCM and most people advised me against VHT/P50 route cause the FB/D412 are designed to work with VHT amps and a Marshall remains a Marshall ))

I kinda put the seach on hiatus for many months, watching a mint Marshall JCM KK resting unused was a bit painful, but I'm a patient guy. So two days ago I detected a nice deal and I pulled the trigger...I just started the transaction to get a Port City OS 212. It's a WGS veteran 30 loaded cab.

What should I expect from such "family arranged marriage" ? )) Marshall+Portcity+WGS veteran30! Does it sound like a nice equation ? ))

What is the general opinion when it comes to WGS veteran 30 and Port city ?

Of course I should mention that I'm a high gain guy, I like them clear, articulate, thumping and mix cutting ;)

Dude, you’re gonna love the vet 30s.

*edit
I have a pair in my StoneAge 212 and they kill w/my modded 50w JCM800-Way more than V30s. The upper mid spike in the freq. response is tamed over the standard Celestion V30.

-kind of a mini Kerry King rig...

-(KK)-2203KK--->MF w/V-30's & K100's

I hope so ! I try to keep my expectations on the lower side, but I have seen many raving posts about WGS in general and veteran30 / retro30 in particular.
Also the fact that your amp is a modded jcm800 means that I will hopefully get similar results with the WGS ! How do you like the Veteran 30 in a loud mix ?

I thought the MF was a safe bet, but they are rare, also hauling a 412 brought me back to reason :D
Most users describe PC OS 212 cabs as loud and thumping yet they are lighter than what they should be, that was the main selling point for me, but I have never tried or seen one in real flesh.

Yet I'm still waiting for someone who owns the cab to chime in

I have two os2x12s that I've gigged for about 7 years now...sound great and light for their size!
Mine have scumback m75/h75 mix with a Friedman Marsha.

The only other cab is like to try is a stone age, but the light weight of the PCs is nice for load in and out.

i had two port os cabs.

i prefer a bogner os and a standard mesa

more balllsy at higher volume.

As strange as it sounds, some posters have said that after many years of use, they sold Mesa and kept PC. I think it's again a matter of flavor and subjective taste !

Do you mean that the PC isn't "more ballsy" at higher volume ?

Although I have never tried them, it seems that one can't go wrong with Forte, PORT CITY and Stoneage, veteran users keep raving about them, but the speakers are prone to make or break a cab!

I never tried WGS veteran 30 which (after reading numerous posts) seems to have it's own thing going on rather than being a Vintage 30 copy.

I guess I will have to be patient for a couple weeks before I receive the PC OS 212 and see how it sounds with my Marshall KK and my all mahogany flying v!!!

I’m curious on the OS also, and whether I should go vertical or not, I’m thinking vertical. They are located close to me and they offered to let me try out a cab for a week before I make any decisions, they seem like really nice folks

Also, to address your original post, I have a fat bottom cab with p50e, I actually preferred it with other amps over the fryette/vht ones I've owned. I owned the Deliverance 120, and pitbull CL and I found that both of those sounded stale with p50e

However, I played Laney GH100L and a Framus Cobra through the fat bottom with the p50e and found that it sounded amazing with both, but better with the Laney. I generally prefer speakers with a flat EQ, and the p50e are good for that.

WOAH!

Just a couple seconds I was checking your post, you explained that you are starting to gig regularly, thus hauling a heavy 4x12 isn't as practical as a light 212!

Funny thing is when I first got my Marshall KK I was all set on getting a FB or D412 !

Now I see your message here, magic

  I didn't mind 4x12's when I was hauling around a marshall JCM 900 cab, it's pretty light. But then I ended up with a Randall XL cab, amazing cab but heavy as sin (over 100lbs loaded I believe) got rid of that and ended up with the Fryette fat bottom which maybe saved me around 10lbs? Not very much lol.
But also I've been just curious about how the OS cabs sound, and if I don't like that I'll probably just go back to the 900 cab

Unfortunately I never had the chance to try the fat bottom. There was a guy who told me that his jcm800 sounded awesome with the FB. Yet I was advised by so many to avoid matching my Marshall jcm kk with VHT cabs. I think it's a matter of subjective taste, but I can not afford to go into a long process of trial and error, I just want one nice rig in order to focus on playing rather than flipping gear

Judging by my experience with the cab and brief experience with the KK head, sounds like a match made in heaven, that head is a beast!

I'm sure the Port City will be a great cab, it gets a lot of praise, and I'd say with the right speakers the difference between it and a good 4x12 will be extremely minimal. At least, that's what the rep told me and also what I've read
Guess we will find out

Yeah we will find out for sure! I will surely share my thoughts once I receive and try the cab! I have already seen a youtube vid of a Marshall jcm 800 with a PS 212 and it sounds amazing but a youtube vid is a youtube vid. I have heard nice reviews about WGS and their veteran 30, but if for whatever reason I feel that the WGS v30 aren't up to my expectations then I can always get another speaker, for instance a creamback 75 or even a p50e, it would be less costy than flipping 412 cabs ;)
