Has a big hole in it tuned to certain frequencies (usually low ones)...sounds huge.
 
my question is, if these are so awesome portcity whatever, why do i see so few at concerts? Do they really blow away the typical 4x12? I dont really care about 2x12s, i dont play thru them so ... but i see people saying the 2x12 blows away a 4x12, many brands as well? whats the secret mojo?

My list is mostly 2x12's because I like them. many of the manufacturers also make 4x12's.

My Port City did blow away my mesa, it sounded bigger and was smaller.

Another benefit of ported is also in feel which can only be experienced.

I'd say you see so few at concerts because the industry standard has been sealed for a long time and most guitarists don't even know they exist. they have been catching on quickly as of late.

In the end still just another flavor that some find delicious and others will spit out.

Ported loudspeaker cabinets:

Also known as vented (or ported) systems, these enclosures improve low-frequency output, increase efficiency, or reduce the size of an enclosure, using cabinet openings or passive radiating elements to transform and transmit low-frequency energy from the rear of the speaker to the listener. As with sealed enclosures, they may be empty, lined, filled or (rarely) stuffed with damping materials. Port tuning frequency is a function of cross-section and length. This enclosure type is very common, and provides the maximum deep-bass output for a given enclosure volume. Vented system design using computer modeling has been practiced since about 1985, when researchers Thiele and Small first systematically applied electrical filter theory to the acoustic behavior of loudspeakers in enclosures. optimum performance is a complex sum of the properties of the specific driver, the enclosure and port.

"Thiele/Small" commonly refers to a set of electromechanical parameters that define the specified low frequency performance of a loudspeaker driver. These parameters are published in specification sheets by driver manufacturers so that designers have a guide in selecting off-the-shelf drivers for loudspeaker designs. Many of the parameters are strictly defined only at the resonant frequency, but they are generally applicable in the frequency range where the diaphragm motion is intended to be purely pistonic, i.e. without cone breakup.

Using these parameters, a loudspeaker designer may simulate the position, velocity and acceleration of the diaphragm, the input impedance and the sound output of a system comprising a loudspeaker and enclosure. Rather than purchase off-the-shelf components, loudspeaker design engineers often define desired performance and work backwards to a set of parameters and manufacture a driver with said characteristics or order it from a driver manufacturer. Thiele/Small parameters are named after A. Neville Thiele of the Australian Broadcasting Commission, and Richard H. Small of the University of Sydney, who pioneered this line of analysis for loudspeakers.

Ive played a bunch that were on that list but certainley not all of them but Ill say this, after meeting Danial and playing his cabs, suffice to say that my next cab will be a Port City without hesitation...

I bought my Port City from Daniel about two years ago when there was little information available and not too many people had them.

i wanted to know more about the cab and its design I wound up emailing Daniel a few times and he treated me like a Rock Star. He even sent me a free T shirt because he forgot to include mounting screws for the speakers.

I thought doing business with him was great and his product kicks azz. I'm sure there are other good ported cabs out there but for now I have no reason to try them.





I have been wearing my Port City t shirt so much that its no longer black! :rock:
